Apple has acquired another company whose technology it will use to improve its products. This time, the Californian company bought the British startup Spectral Edge, which developed an algorithm to improve the quality of photos in real time.

Spectral Edge was originally founded for academic research at the University of East Anglia. The startup focused on developing technologies that could improve the quality of photos taken on smartphones only with the help of software. Spectral Edge eventually received a patent for the Image Fusion feature, which uses machine learning to reveal more color and detail in any image, but especially in low-light photos. The function simply combines a standard photo with an infrared image.

Apple already uses a similar principle for Deep Fusion and Smart HDR, and the Night Mode in the new iPhone 11 works in part this way. Thanks to the acquisition of Spectral Edge, it could improve the mentioned functions even more. In any case, it is more or less clear that we will meet the technology of this British startup in one of the other iPhones and thanks to it we will take even better photos.

The acquisition was revealed by the agency Bloomberg and Apple has not yet officially commented on it. It's not even clear how much he spent on Spectral Edge.
