Apple this week named its first-ever senior director of global augmented reality (AR) product marketing. He became Frank Casanova, who until now worked at Apple in the iPhone marketing department.

On his LinkedIn profile, Casanova newly states that he is responsible for all aspects of product marketing for Apple's augmented reality initiative. Casanova has thirty years of experience at Apple, he was one of the key figures in the launch of the first iPhone and was in charge of, for example, concluding agreements with operators. Among other things, he was also involved in the development of the QuickTime player.

Michael Gartenberg, Apple's former senior marketing director, called Casanova the ideal person for the position in the augmented reality department. Apple has been working on augmented reality for a long time. Evidence is, for example, the introduction and continuous development of the ARKit platform and related applications, as well as the effort to adapt the possibilities of new products to augmented reality. For 2020, Apple is planning iPhones with 3D-based augmented reality cameras, and teams of experts are already working on the respective products.

Frank Casanova joined Apple in 1997 as the senior director of graphics, audio and video for MacOS X. He held this position for about ten years before being transferred to the iPhone marketing department, where he worked until recently. Apple made its first significant foray into the waters of augmented reality with the launch of the iOS 11 operating system, which offered a number of useful products and tools within ARKit. Augmented reality is used, for example, by the native Measurement application or the Animoji function.
