Apple called an extraordinary press conference for today, which is not quite the norm. It was expected what solution Apple would actually present. And you can briefly read how it turned out in this article.
Before the start of the conference, Apple did not forgive a little joke and released The iPhone 4 Antenna Song. You can play it on YouTube.
Apple said that all smartphones have problems with the antenna of the present. For now, the laws of physics cannot be cheated, but Apple and the competition are working hard on this problem. Steve Jobs showed videos of how other competing smartphones lost signal when held in a certain style. Apple also drew attention to Nokia, which sticks stickers on its phones that the user should not touch in these places.
During the Q&A, a Blackberry user from the audience spoke up and said that he had just tried it on his Blackberry and had no such problem. Steve Jobs only replied that this problem cannot be replicated everywhere (which is exactly why most iPhone 4 users don't have the problem).
However, if someone requests it, they can do so on the Apple website order a free iPhone 4 case. If you already bought the case, Apple will refund your money for it. People asked Steve if he used the cover and he said no. "I hold my phone exactly like this (showing death grip) and I've never had a problem," said Steve Jobs.
Likewise, Apple said that the iPhone has always beenclearly displayed the signal strength. So Apple redesigned the formula and it is now used in iOS 4.0.1. People will no longer see a radical drop in the signal when holding the phone in a certain way (for example, from 5 lines of signal to just one). As the Anandtech server already wrote, with the new iOS 4.0.1 the drop should be a maximum of two commas.
Apple mentioned its testing facilities. He invested a total of 100 million dollars in them and it is about 17 different test rooms. But Jobs did not mention whether they lacked real-world testing. Anyway, the rooms shown looked like something from a far-off sci-fi movie. :)
Apple was looking into how many people are actually affected by the antenna problem. We would assume that it is a mass of people. Apple, however, in some way only 0,55% of users complained (and if you know the US environment, you know that here people complain about absolutely everything and want compensation for it). They also looked at what percentage of users returned the iPhone 4. It was 1,7% of users compared to 6% for the iPhone 3GS.
Next, they fought over one more important number. Steve Jobs wondered what percentage of users would drop calls. AT&T could not tell them the data compared to the competition, but Steve Jobs admitted that on average per 100 calls he had iPhone 4 more missed calls. By how much? Less than one call away!
As you can see, it was about an overinflated bubble. This is hard data, hard to argue with. However, if someone is not satisfied with their iPhone 4 even after receiving a free bumper case, they will be refunded the full amount they paid for the phone. Some people are still reporting problems with the proximity sensor and Apple is still working on it.
Although Apple was silent about the problem, it took it very seriously. He drove his equipment to people who reported problems. They examined everything, measured it and looked for the causes of the problem. Unfortunately, their silence only inflated this bubble. But as Steve Jobs told journalists, "You should have nothing to write about after that".
Otherwise, it was a pleasant evening, Steve Jobs joked, but on the other hand bhe did everything with the utmost responsibility. He patiently answered a lot of uncomfortable questions. Although I don't think this bubble will just burst, it's a closed topic for me. And thanks again to everyone who was at the online broadcast. Thanks to them, it was such a pleasant evening!
poor thing
.
otherwise you are the most hypocritical apple server, superiphone.cz is a format compared to you
yes, but the author will probably advise you to read from beginning to end, or he will tell you that he writes the same as the NYT and others, so it's OK.
I'll add for myself - there is no rear problem, it doesn't exist, it never existed, and that's why I'm going to give the bumper for free and whoever wants to can return the phone and we'll refund their money... hmmm special, so this is the first such case in history when there's no problem, but still we have to solve something .
But maybe it could be the heat.
Take a look at such a Blackberry na http://www.apple.com/antenna/ .. And is it resolved somewhere? Do you have an iPhone 4 and have problems? Show me a single person in CR who will show you that the iPhone 4 has worse reception than the 3GS. I tried the iPhone 4 in real traffic outside of Prague, I tried the famous "death grip", you should also try it to stop having unnecessary notes... :) The iPhone 4 has no more problems with the antenna than any other smartphone, dot.
and you've tried all the smartphones that you claim has no bigger problem than any other smartphone? and did you test all those smartphones and iphones under degraded signal conditions? if so, you're a dude. if not, then it's just bullshit.
And what's so weird about that? It's not a problem, but a gesture needs to be made to appease customers and some media.
Apple posted a video from today's conference on its website: http://events.apple.com.edgesuite.net/100716iab73asc/event/index.html. He also added a page dedicated to the iPhone 4 and the antenna itself: http://www.apple.com/antenna/.
Hey... Is it just me or is 4.0.1 already out?
iTunes is offering me an update to iOS 4.0.1!
Ah, read more articles and I would have learned that it was published earlier... Sorry for the mistakes
As a small child (with pardon), I would say that all phones have these problems.. it is quite logical that if you cover the antenna with your palm, there will be attenuation... the fact that the calls were dropped is a matter of the operator in the USA... when I get my old iPhone 2G (first generation) it did the same to me (the signal drops by approx. 2-3 cells) I hope it clicks for you quickly... this is only massaged by the media... the fact that they give free packaging does not mean that Apple has admitted a mistake... I think that it just wants to please those who have more problems with it and they can't get over it..
Why couldn't I join the live broadcast (http://cink.tv/) ??? About the first 20 min. I watched it, but I went away for about 5 minutes and then it wouldn't connect again!!! Velika Škoda - and will there be a Czech translation of the conference as with the keynote??
In my humble opinion and experience as a M2M GSM/GPRS device developer, the situation is as follows:
1) Apple made a serious mistake when designing the iPhone 4 antenna. If the GSM antenna is connected to the bottom part of the device (now I don't know what kind of antenna it is), the antenna parameters will change significantly and in some cases the signal will be lost. Apple will solve this by changing the design of the antenna (if it has not already done so) and those who already have an iPhone4 will close their mouths with a piece of rubber with a production price of around 50 cents.
2) Apple made a mistake in the SW and thereby highlighted the problem (this has been fixed since Thursday in 4.0.1).
3) Jobs argued on the press that other devices have the same problem. However, this is not true. The problem may appear the same on the outside - loss of signal, but the cause is different. With iPhone4, 1 sweaty finger is enough and there is a problem. While with other devices, it is necessary to hug almost the entire device with your hand in order for the signal to drop due to the attenuation of the signal by the hand itself. With other devices, it is not possible to galvanically connect the antenna to anything because it is inside the device.
Well, I don't know, but in my opinion, Apple can't reach into the inside of the device as it pleases. If he made only a minor design change there, it will have to pass the FCC tests again and everyone will know.. But must I be wrong?
Well, you wouldn't believe it even if he did it and someone found out... I agree with zkill, but I would forgive Apple, mistakes are made. What bothers me is the rhetoric. It's slander, it's lies, there's no problem. They should have given that cover for free right from the start. With me, they fell quite low in how they approached it. How about not only interpreting Apple's conferences, but trying to wonder after some third-party tests?
Ondra: however, Anandtech is mentioned in the article, for example.. no one did any other advisory tests.. if iFixit takes apart the iPhone and a design change is discovered, the 14205.w5.wedos.net server will certainly be among the first Czech servers to inform about it.. We are happy to talk about a bad product (for example, Mighty Mouse would handle it), but user experiences with iPhone 4 are different and that is why we, as the only Czech iPhone 4 server, defended more than is healthy during this senseless hysteria.. it is not the standard :)
2 Jan Zdarsa: no it inevitably depends on the nature of the changes. Otherwise, on top of that, the FCC. It's an insanely bureaucratic organization. I had to deal with them once and never again...
Since this would be a change of antenna, I think that everything would have to go through an inspection.. that's exactly what the FCC has to inspect..
Well, the nature of the change matters here. Therefore, it is not possible to say exactly whether it is necessary to repeat the tests at the FCC (footnote, the FCC does not test anything - they do not even have the technical equipment for it, the tests are carried out by accredited laboratories, and the FCC only puts a "round stamp" on it).
Sure, I don't really understand this part.. but I thought it would make sense.. because otherwise I would miss the point of the FCC :)
I don't exactly understand what's going on here, but has anyone really been to the antenna section of the Apple website and looked at the comparison videos? You are really so blind to the fact that the iPhone 4 has a problem with the antenna and that's the end of it. Like Honza, I had the opportunity to test approx. iPhone 4 week and I couldn't simulate the problem with the signal even when holding it quite tightly. If you want objectivity after Apple, be objective yourself.
And did you try licking your finger and bridging the insulation strip in the lower left corner? Have you tried it in places with bad signal? Have you been to the US to try the iPhone4 in a different frequency band than our usual 900MHz? Just because you didn't see the problem during the week doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Do you usually lick your fingers before you start a phone call? I feel sorry for them. On the contrary. Other friends of mine who have the opportunity to use iPhone 4, both here in CR and in England, do not experience similar problems. I don't know if I'm licking my hands at the same time or if I'm desperately trying to hold the phone, but I don't. I understand that those who want to write beats will always find a hulk, but I don't really understand this witch hunt. Apple has clearly shown that another smartphone has a similar problem in the AT&T network, and you're going to start licking your fingers.
Ok, you don't have to lick your fingers. It is enough to have really sweaty hands, which is probably not a problem in the current weather. I hope you recognize that. And you know why it's mainly a problem in the USA because most of the AT&T network runs on 1900MHz (850MHz has less coverage). And as you surely know, the 1900MHz signal spreads worse than our usual 900MHz (1800MHz coverage is only very rare here).
Apple only behaves like any commercial company. He can't admit a design problem because he would immediately have even more lawsuits on his neck (tribute to the USA is a strange country). And so he came up with a loop with comparisons to other phones. Apple will quietly change the design of the antenna and the problem will be forgotten over time...
I don't know much... I don't like Apple's approach, that it didn't pull its tail between its legs and just "demonstrates" that it's just that the other devices have the same thing, despite the fact that everyone holds it differently... Anyway, I agree with one... Even if it's a problem, it's just an awful lot of media attention bubble just because it's scary to go against iProduktum Trends...
Anyway, on the other hand, if Jobs pulled his tail between his legs and admitted the mistake, I will be listening from all servers how Apple is naked, that he made a mistake and that nobody buys his smartphones and products...
So which is better? ;(
It seems to me like when my son brings 4 from the road, I scold him and he makes excuses that his co-worker also got it. That doesn't really interest me at all, and it doesn't excuse him in any way. Don't you think it's funny?
Not exactly.
Given that Cestina is slowly but surely dying out and if you admit that you love her you are labeled a neo-Nazi, I would praise my son :) but that is a debate for another server...
In any case, if something more interesting was going on, even the dog wouldn't be upset after this...
this is a pretty good point: http://www.macblog.sk/novinky/smartphony-maju-svoje-problemy-preco-ale-consumer-reports-neodporucaju-len-iphone-4-3922.html
