In this regular column, every day we look at the most interesting news that revolves around the California company Apple. Here we focus exclusively on the main events and selected (interesting) speculations. So if you are interested in current events and want to be informed about the apple world, definitely spend a few minutes on the following paragraphs.

Apple has patented a display with a variable refresh rate

Apple users have been calling for an improved display for a few years, which could finally boast a higher refresh rate than 60 Hz. Even before the presentation of last year's iPhone 12, it was often said that we would finally see a phone with a 120Hz display. But these reports were later refuted. Apple was allegedly unable to develop a 100% functional display with this benefit, which is why this gadget did not make it to the latest generation. But currently, Patently Apple recorded a new patent that Apple had registered only today. It specifically describes a display with a variable refresh rate that could automatically switch between 60, 120, 180 and 240 Hz as needed.

The refresh rate itself actually indicates how many times the display renders the number of frames in one second, and it is therefore logical that the higher this value is, the better and smoother the image we get. Players of competitive games, in which this is a key aspect, may know this. As we mentioned above, all previous iPhones boasted only the standard 60 Hz. Since 2017, however, Apple has started betting on the so-called ProMotion technology for its iPad Pros, which also variably changes the refresh rate up to 120 Hz.

The Pro models do not offer a 120Hz display either:

Whether we will finally see a better display this year is, of course, unclear for now. In the possible implementation of 120Hz technology, it is also necessary to proceed cautiously, because this, at first glance, great gadget, has a negative impact on battery life. In the case of the iPhone 13, this ailment should be solved by the adaptation of the energy-efficient LTPO technology, thanks to which it would be possible to offer a display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, without worsening the aforementioned durability.

The incidence of Mac malware has dropped significantly in 2020

Unfortunately, no Apple device is flawless, and as is usual with computers in particular, you can encounter a virus quite easily. Today, the company responsible for the renowned Malwarebytes antivirus shared this year's report, in which it shared some very interesting information. For example, the incidence of malware on Macs dropped by a whopping 2020% in 38. While in 2019 Malwarebytes detected a total of 120 threats, last year there were "only" 855 threats. Threats aimed directly at individuals fell by 305% overall.

However, since last year we have been plagued by a global pandemic, due to which human contact has been greatly reduced, schools have switched to distance learning mode and companies to the so-called home office, understandably this has also had an impact on this area as well. Threats in the area of business increased by 31%. The company pointed to a further decrease in the case of so-called adware and PUPs, or unsolicited programs. But Malwarebytes added that, on the other hand (unfortunately), classic malware, which includes backdoors, data theft, cryptocurrency mining, and the like, grew by a total of 61%. Although this number looks scary at first glance, malware only accounts for 1,5% of the total number of threats, with the aforementioned adware and PUPs being the most common problem.

Apple and the flexible iPhone? We could expect the first model in 2023

In recent years, flexible smartphones have claimed the floor. Undoubtedly, this is an extremely interesting concept, which could theoretically bring a number of great possibilities and benefits. For now, Samsung can be considered the king of this technology. That is why some Apple fans are understandably calling for a flexible iPhone, while so far we have seen quite a few patents according to which Apple is at least toying with the idea of a flexible display. According to the latest information from the international technology company Omdia, the Cupertino company could introduce a flexible iPhone with a 7″ OLED display and Apple Pencil support as early as 2023.

In any case, Apple still has a lot of time, so it is not absolutely clear how it will all turn out in the final. In any case, several (verified) sources agree on one thing - Apple is currently testing flexible iPhones. By the way, this was also confirmed by Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, according to whom the company is in the phase of internal testing, through which only two of several variants have passed. How do you view flexible phones? Would you trade your current iPhone for a piece like this, or would you rather stay true to it?
