Apple continues to strive to prevent unauthorized access to its devices. It is not in his interest to have components changed by unauthorized service centers or even by users themselves. iOS will now display a notification alerting users to the installation of an unofficial battery.

The well-known server iFixit, which is focused on repairing and modifying electronics, came to the function in iOS. The editors have documented a new feature of iOS that is used to detect third-party batteries. Subsequently, functions such as Battery condition or usage overview are blocked systemically.

There will also be a new special notification to alert users of battery verification issues. The message will say that the system could not verify the authenticity of the battery and the battery health features will not be able to be displayed.

The interesting thing is that this notification is displayed even if you use an original battery, but it is replaced by an unauthorized service or you yourself. You will not see the message only if the service intervention is carried out by an authorized center and uses an original battery.

Feature part of iOS, but chip only in new iPhones

Everything is probably related to the controller from Texas Instruments, which is equipped with every original battery. Verification with the iPhone's motherboard is apparently taking place in the background. In the event of a failure, the system will issue an error message and limit functions.

Apple is thus purposefully limiting the ways to service iPhones. So far, iFixit editors have confirmed that the feature is in both the current iOS 12 and the new iOS 13. However, the report is only showing up for iPhone XR, XS and XS Max so far. For the elderly, restrictions and reports did not appear.

The official position of the company is consumer protection. After all a video has already gone viral on the internet, where the battery literally exploded during replacement. It was, of course, an unauthorized access to the device.

On the other hand, iFixit points out that this is another restriction on repairs, including post-warranty ones. Whether it is an artificial obstacle or a fight for the safety of the user, it is necessary to reckon with it anew. The same function will certainly be present in the iPhones presented in the fall.
