Apple is working hard on a new app known internally as "Green Torch." It combines the functionality of the already existing tracking applications Find iPhone and Find Friends. Cupertino also plans to add tracking of other things with a special device.

The employees, who have direct access to the software being developed, were given a peek under the hood of the upcoming new application. It replaces Find iPhone and Find Friends. Their functionality is thus merged into one. The development takes place primarily for iOS, but thanks to the Marzipan framework, it will later be rewritten for macOS as well.

Find iPhone

The improved application will offer a clearer and more efficient search for lost things. There will be a "Find network" option, which should supposedly allow the device to be located even without an active connection via mobile data or Wi-Fi.

In addition to sharing your location between family members, it will be easier to share your location with friends. Friends will be able to ask other people to share their position. If a friend shares their location, they will be able to create a notification when they arrive or leave that location.

All shared user and family devices will be discoverable using the new unified app. Products can be put into lost mode, or you can easily play an audio notification on them, just like in Find My iPhone.

You can find anything thanks to the number of users

However, Apple wants to go further. He is currently developing a new hardware product codenamed "B389" that will make any item with this "tag" searchable in the new app. Tags will be paired via iCloud account.

The tag will work with the iPhone and measure the distance from it. You will receive a notification if the subject moves too far. In addition, it will be possible to set places where objects will ignore the distance from the iPhone. It will also be possible to share seats with friends or family members.

The tags will be able to store contact information, which can then be read by any Apple device if the tag is in a "lost" state. The original owner will then receive a notification that the item has been found.

Cupertino apparently plans to use the huge number of active iOS devices to create a human network that will be helpful in finding (not only) lost Apple products.

9to5Mac server that with information exclusively he came, does not yet know the release date of this new product. However, he estimates already this September.
