In connection with the events surrounding mobile data modems for future iPhones, the American The Wall Street Journal came up with very interesting information. According to their sources, Apple spent a significant part of last year in discussions with Intel about the possible purchase of their division focused on the development and production of mobile data modems.

Intel 5G Modem JoltJournal

According to Intel sources, negotiations began around the middle of last year. With the purchase, Apple wanted to acquire new patents and technologies that the company could use during the development of its own data modem for next-generation iPhones and iPads. Intel has quite a lot of experience in this regard, but also a whole range of patents, skilled employees and know-how.

However, the aforementioned negotiations ended about a few weeks ago when it was revealed that Apple had reached an agreement with Qualcomm to continue using their modems.

Intel sources say the company is still actively looking for a possible buyer for its mobile modem division. It has not been doing well in recent years, and its operation costs Intel about a billion dollars a year. Therefore, the company is looking for a suitable buyer who would be able to use both technology and personnel. Whether it will be Apple or not is still up in the air.

However, if Apple is developing its own version of mobile data modems, the acquisition of Intel's development division would be a logical choice. The only drawback may be that Intel mainly has technology for 4G networks, not for the upcoming 5G networks, which will start to play a role next year or the year after.
