That's what Bloomberg's sources claim. Currently, the subscription model is well known in connection with software, where for a monthly fee we can access services such as Netflix, HBO Max, Spotify, Apple Music, Apple Arcade and many others. With hardware, however, this is no longer such a common thing, on the contrary. It is still ingrained in people today that only software is available for subscription. But that is no longer a condition.

For other companies, we will not purchase their main product on a subscription basis, at least not for now. But the world is gradually changing, which is why renting hardware is no longer something foreign. We can meet him practically at every step.

In the first place, we can arrange the rental of computing power, which is very well known to server administrators, webmasters and others who do not have their own resources. After all, it is also much easier and often more advantageous to simply pay a few tens or hundreds of crowns per month for a server, than to bother not only with its financially demanding acquisition, but especially with the not exactly twice as simple maintenance. Platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and many others work in this way. In theory, we could also include cloud storage here. Although we can purchase, for example, home NAS storage and sufficiently large disks, most people prefer to invest in "rental space".
Google two steps ahead
At the end of 2019, a new operator called Google Fi entered the American market. Of course, this is a project from Google, which provides telecommunications services to customers there. And it is Google Fi that offers a special plan in which you get a Google Pixel 5a phone for a monthly fee (subscription). There are even three plans to choose from and it depends on whether you want to switch to a newer model in two years, for example, if you want device protection and the like. Unfortunately, the service is understandably not available here.

But practically the same program has been operating in our region for a long time, sponsored by the largest domestic retailer Alza.cz. It was Alza who came up with her service years ago alzaNEO or by renting hardware on a subscription basis. In addition, you can come up with practically anything in this mode. The store can offer you the latest iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, Apple Watch and a number of competing devices, as well as computer sets. In this regard, it is extremely advantageous that, for example, you exchange your iPhone for a new one every year without having to deal with anything.
The future of hardware subscriptions
The subscription model is significantly more pleasant for sellers in many ways. Because of this, it is not surprising that the vast majority of developers switch to this form of payment. In short and simply – they can thus count on a "constant" inflow of funds, which in some cases can be significantly better than receiving larger sums in one go. In reality, therefore, it is only a matter of time before this trend moves to the hardware sector as well. As we indicated above, such compulsions have been around for a long time and it is more or less clear that the technological world will move in this direction.
