Apple users are again starting to talk about the implementation of a new high performance mode, which should be aimed at the macOS operating system. The possible arrival of this function was already discussed at the beginning of last year 2020, when various mentions were specifically discovered within the code of the operating system. But they subsequently disappeared and the whole situation died down. Another change is coming now, with the arrival of the latest developer beta version of macOS Monterey, according to which the feature should make the device perform better.

How high performance mode can work

But a relatively simple question arises. How does Apple use software to increase the performance of the entire device, which of course relies on its hardware? Although it may sound complicated, the solution is actually extremely simple. Such a mode would actually work by telling the Mac to literally work at 100%.

Today's computers (not just Macs) have all sorts of limitations to conserve battery and power. Of course, it is not necessary for the device to run at its maximum all the time, which by the way would result in unpleasant fan noise, higher temperatures and the like. Among other things, the macOS Monterey operating system also brings a power saving mode, which you may know from your iPhones, for example. The latter, on the other hand, limits some functions and thus ensures a longer battery life.

Notices and Warnings

As mentioned above, in the beta version of the macOS operating system there was a mention of the so-called high power mode (High Power Mode), which should ensure that the apple computer runs as fast as possible and uses all its capacities. At the same time, there was also a warning about the possibility of significantly faster discharge (in the case of MacBooks) and noise from the fans. However, in the case of Macs with the M1 (Apple Silicon) chip, the mentioned noise is more of a thing of the past and you simply won't encounter it.

Will the mode be available for all Macs?

Finally, there is the question of whether the function will be available for all Macs. For a long time, there has been talk about the arrival of a revised 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro with an M1X chip, which should drastically increase the graphic performance of the device. Currently, the only representative of the Apple Silicon family is the M1 chip, which is used in the so-called entry-level models designed for light work, so it is clear that if Apple really wants to beat its competition, for example in the case of the 16″ MacBook Pro, it will have to significantly increase its graphics performance .

Therefore, there are mentions that the high performance mode could be limited only to this latest addition, or to more powerful Macs. In theory, in the case of a MacBook Air with an M1 chip, it wouldn't even make sense. By activating it, the Mac would start working at its performance limit, due to which the temperatures themselves would understandably increase. Since the Air does not have active cooling, it is possible that apple users would encounter an effect called thermal throttling, where performance is on the contrary limited due to overheating of the device.

At the same time, it is not even clear when this mode will become available to users. Although mentions of its presence in the system have been discovered, it still cannot be tested and it is therefore not 100% confirmed how it actually works in detail. At the moment, we can only hope that we will receive more detailed information soon.
