How long has the Apple Car been talked about and how long will it be before a car actually rolls out of Apple's workshops? It's a longer ride than many think. The proof can also be the 2nd generation CarPlay, which the company already presented at WWD22 and we still can't see it anywhere.

The development of the Apple Car has long been referred to as the Titan project, when this designation began to appear around 2021. But the first mentions of the car itself were already around 2015. So here we are almost 10 years later and we haven't seen anything but CarPlay. But Apple knows how to surprise, it knows how to see its projects through to the end, which is why we have the Vision Pro here. But the car is a bigger problem.

One of the latest leaks talked about the fact that we should expect Apple's own car in 2026. But now this date Bloomberg's Mark Gurman postponed to 2028. At the same time, he adds that he does not rule out a delay. It's funny to see and read because anyone could be such an analyst. Could he be wrong? Unless Apple surprises and actually introduces the product earlier, which is really a zero chance.

But in order to give Gurman at least some credit, he also mentioned that Apple's board of directors is putting considerable pressure on Tim Cook to submit plans or cancel the project. According to Gruman, Apple doesn't even have a prototype. This is also why the year 2028 may actually appear too optimistic.

reality vs. idea

The car industry isn't exactly cash-strapped and faced a significant crisis in the recent past when the world suffered from a chip shortage. Of course, Apple's car should be equipped with them from top to bottom. But it should not be fully autonomous, but at level 2+, so it would still require a driver with the need to intervene at any time, if necessary (level 4 was originally discussed). It's the same with Tesla Autopilot, for example. In addition, the company would not achieve such a margin on its own car as it has on a simple iPhone, and the question is whether it even makes sense to venture into a similar segment.

In addition, it is necessary to take into account the fact that you will probably not order an Apple car from its Online Store, and you will not come to a brick-and-mortar Apple Store for it either. Still, this whole concept falls on many small things that look quite insurmountable (including legislation) and the whole project should be taken with a grain of salt. It's more about the excitement of having something like this here than actually being in the process.

It is not excluded that we will see a concept at some point, but it is quite likely that it will start and end with him. Perhaps it will only be created as a demonstration of what the 3rd generation CarPlay could do, if the automakers gave it a chance. Even if the Apple Car is indeed ever created, it will not be the technology company's first car. You may not have noticed, but this segment has already been penetrated by China's Xiaomi, which already has a real car of its own. You can learn more about it here.
