In the past, when you wanted to replace your computer's hard drive with a larger one, you could use the Secure Erase feature to overwrite it and completely remove all personal data. But thanks to advances in technology, according to Apple, disk encryption is the most secure way.

Encryption as security

It's no secret that simply moving files to the trash and then emptying it will not prevent their possible recovery. If the space freed up by the deletion of these files is not overwritten by other data, there is a high probability that the deleted files can be recovered - this is the principle that, for example, tools for data recovery work on.

Performing a "secure erase" command in Terminal on macOS will purposefully overwrite these orphaned locations so that deleted files cannot be recovered. But according to Apple, Secure Erase no longer represents a 100% guarantee of data irretrievability, and the company does not recommend this procedure, due to the increasing quality and durability of disks.

According to Apple, a modern solution for fast and reliable data deletion is strong encryption, which ensures practically 100% irretrievability of data after the key is destroyed. An encrypted disk cannot be read without a key, and if the user also deletes the corresponding key, he is sure that the deleted data will no longer see the light of day.

iPhone and iPad storage is automatically encrypted, so data can be deleted quickly and reliably on these devices via Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase data and settings. On the Mac, it is necessary to activate the FileVault function. Its activation has been part of the process of setting up a new Mac since the release of the OS X Yosemite operating system.
