Along with the official release OS X Yosemite Apple also released a major update for its office suite iWork, on both OS X and iOS. Applications from iLife followed shortly after: iMovie, GarageBand and even Aperture received minor updates. It should be recalled that Apple plans to completely cancel iPhoto and Aperture in favor of the upcoming application Photos. After all, it can also be seen in the list of new features in the update, where GarageBand and iMovie received a whole range of new functions and improvements, while iPhoto and Aperture only have better compatibility with OS X Yosemite.

iMovie

First of all, iMovie got a Yosemite-style redesign. The user interface itself has not changed, but the appearance is flatter and is at home in the new operating system. Apple has finally added support for more export formats, as before it only offered a compressed MP4 version, while previous versions offered multiple formats. Newly, iMovie can export to adjustable MP4 format (H.264 encoding), ProRes and audio only. Videos can also be emailed via MailDrop.

Several improvements in the editor can also be found in the new version. On the timeline, you can select a part of the clip by dragging the mouse at the bottom, any frame from the video can be shared as a picture. The editing panel is still visible for easy access to audio and video tools, and performance on older Macs should also be noticeably better. Finally, developers can use iMovie to create in-app video previews. The new version supports video formats recorded by capturing the screen from an iPhone or iPad, adds 11 animated titles suitable for promoting the application and the ability to export video directly in the format for the App Store.

Garage band

Unlike iMovie, the music recording app hasn't received a redesign, but there are some interesting new features. The main one is Bass Designer. This allows you to set up a virtual bass machine by combining the simulation of classic and modern amplifiers, boxes and microphones. Virtual instruments in GarageBand have been a long-standing shortcoming of the application, so this is a major novelty for bass players. Also added is access to audio plugins for detailed track sound adjustments, vocal recording presets that should simplify voice recording setup, GarageBand projects can be shared via MailDrop, and finally, vertical zoom automatically adjusts to the height of tracks.

Finally, both updates change the appearance of the main app icon. You can update iLife and Aperture for free in the Mac App Store
