If you have been interested in the happenings around Apple for some time now, you probably remember the huge case from 2011, when Apple accused Samsung of blatantly copying the design of their iPhone, thereby enriching the success of the apple company and taking away some of profits. The whole case revolved around the now legendary patent for a 'smartphone with rounded corners'. After more than seven years, he is returning to court, and this time should really be the last time. A billion dollars is up for grabs again.

The whole case has been going on since 2011, and a year after that it looked like there might be a resolution. A jury ruled in 2012 that Apple was in the right and that Samsung had indeed infringed several technical and design patents that belonged to Apple. Samsung was supposed to pay Apple that billion dollars (in the end the amount was reduced to 'only' 548 million dollars), which became a stumbling block. After the publication of this judgment, the next phase of this case began, when Samsung challenged the decision to pay this amount, given that Apple is claiming damages tied to the total price of the iPhones, not based on the value of the infringed patents as such.

Samsung has been litigating this argument for six years, and after going through several instances, this case appeared before the court again and perhaps for the last time. Apple's main argument is still the same – the amount of damage is determined based on the price of the entire iPhone. Samsung argues that only specific patents and technical solutions have been infringed, and the amount of damage should be calculated from this. The goal of the process is to finally decide how much Samsung should pay Apple. Should there be an additional payment? those billions of dollars, or other (significantly lower amounts).

Today there were initial statements during which it was said, for example, that the design is one of the key features of Apple devices and if it is copied in a targeted way, it damages the product as such. Samsung is said to have enriched itself by "millions and millions of dollars" with this step, therefore the requested amount is adequate according to Apple's representatives. The development of the first iPhone was an extremely lengthy process, during which dozens of prototypes were worked on before designers and engineers arrived at the "ideal and iconic design" that became one of the key elements of the phone itself. Samsung then took this years-in-the-making concept and "blatantly copied it". The representative of Samsung, on the other hand, requests that the amount of damages be calculated at 28 million dollars for the above reasons.
