The date is July 10, 2008, and Apple is launching its App Store. However, at that time, he has no idea how successful his app store will be. Back then, the App Store started as a small store with "only" five hundred items, today we can find more than two million different applications and games in it. It also boasts more than 170 billion downloads, with nearly 10 apps having individually secured a million dollars in revenue.

It was in connection with the tenth anniversary that the server arrived App Annie with statistics summarizing the most downloaded and top-grossing apps over the past decade. Some you would expect in the lists, but over the years other interesting applications have been released that managed to make their way into the top ten.

In terms of games, it's no big surprise that Candy Crush Saga dominates the downloads. The addictive puzzle game is followed by another highly entertaining Subway Surfers venture. And the no less famous Fruit Ninja appeared on the third place. In the rest of the top ten, we find other famous titles that became a hit immediately after their release and remain in the higher ranks to this day. Clash of Clans rules the category of the most profitable games. This title generates the biggest earnings so far in the last decade. Candy Crush Saga takes second place thanks to in-app purchases. The Japanese creatures were able to mix up the order quite well, as the phenomenon Pokémon GO climbed to third place. An interesting fact remains that mobile games account for 75% of App Store revenue, with game purchases accounting for only 31%. The rest refer to in-game purchases.

We are moving from games to social networks. Unsurprisingly, Facebook, Messenger and YouTube dominate this category. Behind them we also find giants such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Snapchat, Skype or even Google Maps. The last ranks were filled by the applications of the Chinese giant Tencent, which are not so well known in our region. People spent the most on subscriptions to streaming services such as Netflix, Spotify and HBO, but Tinder, for example, also made the list. The rest of the ranking is once again made up of applications from large Asian companies.

When it comes to individual countries, users from the United States and China are the most downloaded apps. Japan, the United Kingdom, Russia and France rank a long way behind them. A similar trend can be observed in the rankings regarding spending on applications and games. The first ranks are once again dominated by the United States and China, but closely followed by Japan.

The last chart shows that between 2012 and 2017 sales in the App Store grew greatly, according to App Annie by up to 30%. Compared to Google Play, it does not boast as many downloads, but Apple users are significantly more willing to pay for applications, games and content. This is also why the App Store is more lucrative for developers. In 2017, revenue from apps in the App Store reached $42,5 million, and is set to grow 80% over the next five years, reaching $2022 million in 75,7.
