Google has updated its iOS version of the Smart Lock application, which now has the ability to use the strongest form of security that Google offers its users - 2FA, or two-factor authorization.

Owners of user accounts from Google can use their iPhone as a tool to unlock two-factor authentication starting today. This was previously available either using a physical key or the Smart Lock application on the Android platform. As part of the new iOS version update, Google implemented Apple's security enclave, so even iPhones and iPads can serve as an authorized key to a 2FA-equipped Google account. The latest application is labeled 1.6 and is available as of today free in the App Store.

The novelty was added to the application thanks to the security enclave, which contains data from both Touch ID (fingerprint) and Face ID (3D face scan). So when Google for the needs of the account, or some connected app needs to authorize user, just use Touch ID/Face ID instead of original dongle. Although dongles are secure, their deployment in practice can be quite expensive if you need more of them. Linking the authorization service with a sufficiently secure smartphone makes sense. You always have your phone with you and (in the case of iPhones) thanks to the presence of Face ID/Touch ID, it also offers a very robust security system. Selected smartphones on the Android platform received this functionality six months ago, so iPhone owners had to wait a while.
