Longman represents a brand of reliability, prestige and quality in the field of dictionaries, language guides and textbooks. Maybe you own an excellent one Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English in hard copy, perhaps as a DVD-ROM. But what to do if you need to get to the words immediately, anywhere? Longman did not sleep for a while and prepared several of its products for the iPhone, including the mentioned dictionary based on the fifth edition.

So some numbers for your idea. The dictionary contains 230 thousand words, phrases and meanings. Another 165 examples based on natural English, i.e. that which appears not only in textbooks, but also in everyday life. It offers a selection of two thousand words that you will most often encounter in everyday speech. Then three thousand of the most common words that you can find in written form. The integrated thesaurus contains over 20 synonyms, antonyms and related words. In the iPhone version there are 88 thousand audio recordings of words.

Now without numbers: You can find English and American pronunciation for the words. The application will point out the differences between the spoken and written use of the word. It doesn't avoid grammar either and points out the most common mistakes.

To put it briefly, Longman is an excellent companion when working with the English language. Investing in this app (thirty dollars) is an investment in education. And although it sounds like a phrase, it carries a clear definition of the Longman application.

The offer was the first thing that caught my attention most frequently used words. In the iPhone version, you have a dictionary prepared in this way according to several categories – 1000 / 2000 / 3000 most frequent words in spoken speech, 1000 / 2000 / 3000 most frequent words in written speech. Each group has its own label. Vocabularies can be browsed, searched by the initial letter, it's just a pity that in the list you then have a category abbreviation for the word (that is, it belongs, for example, to the thousand most frequent words in spoken English). Therefore, it is not possible to display only one category, you have to use these icons to navigate.

In practice, the Longman dictionary is used by searching for a word, displaying it, you can listen to the pronunciation, you will find not only an explanation (in English), but also the sentences in which the word appears (you can also play the audio track). You can save the word in your own folder/bookmark for further work.

The display of the history of the last searched/browsed words also works here.

The icon in the bottom line with a letter is definitely important i. In other applications, we usually use it to get to basic information about the product, but here it refers to the additional wealth of the Longman dictionary. Grammar, lists of irregular verbs, notices on the differences between written and spoken English... It is practically such a textbook.

I would be happy if there was a version of the application for the iPad as well, after all, studying grammatical phenomena would be more pleasant for me on a larger display. On the other hand, thanks to the mobile form of the Longman dictionary, you can access it at any time. Its biggest advantage is definitely not the design, but the rich vocabulary, the way passwords are processed and, last but not least, the focus on grammar and on being able to focus (especially if you are new to the language) really only on the most important things, or the most frequented.
