You certainly know the feeling when you get a new, expensive smartphone and you anxiously watch whether it has a scratch or, God forbid, a crack. They say that the first scratch hurts the most, and you almost don't even notice other injuries to your smartphone. But there are also accidents that affect your smartphone so much that it is difficult or impossible to continue using it. What do you do to prevent these accidents or their consequences?

New message from SquareTrade offers an interesting insight into the statistics on the number of devices that their owners managed to break this year. In addition, we can learn from the report how much users had to invest in repairing their phones and how significantly the prices of these repairs have increased over the past few years.

In a report from insurance provider SquareTrade, smartphone owners in the United States broke more than 50 million displays this year, paying a total of $3,4 billion in repairs. Broken displays, along with broken batteries, touch screen problems and scratched screens, account for up to 66% of all damage this year. Unsurprisingly, the most common way to damage a smartphone is by dropping it on the ground. Other causes include dropping the phone from a pocket, dropping it into water, dropping it from a table, and last but not least, drowning in a toilet bowl.

But the report also brings another sad statistic: 5761 smartphones break every hour in America. At the same time, roughly 50% of users underestimate the cost of repair, 65% prefer to live with a broken display, and another 59% even prefer to upgrade to a new device rather than pay for a repair. Depending on the extent of repairs and possible replacements, the price for a repair ranges from $199 to $599 for the iPhone XS Max. Of course, the cheaper iPhone XR is less expensive to repair, but it's still more than most Americans expect, according to the report.
