Along with new versions of iOS, Apple also regularly releases updates for the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs, which run Apple's modified mobile operating system. Some functions we could already see in the beta version, but some are completely new. Although Apple versioned the beta version as 5.4, it finally bears the designation Apple TV 6.0.

  • AirPlay from iCloud – this brand new feature is the answer to Google Chromecast. AirPlay from iCloud lets you stream purchased content in iTunes directly from Apple's servers instead of streaming it locally via AirPlay. The iOS device then serves as a controller. The function cuts the volume of transferred data in half, on the other hand, the video may take a long time to be loaded into the cache and it is necessary to wait a while. AirPlay from iCloud is only available for iOS 7 devices.
  • iTunes Radio – as the beta version already hinted, Apple TV now supports the iTunes Radio service, which Apple introduced at WWDC 2013. Users can thus stream music from Apple's servers, where the database reads millions of songs, create their own radio stations and discover new artists. iTunes Radio contains advertisements, but iTunes Match subscribers will not experience them. The service is not yet available in the Czech Republic.
  • iCloud Photos & Videos – This feature replaces the current Photostream and allows you to display both your photo and video stream as well as content that others have shared with you via Photostream.
  • Apple TV can now also automatically update when a new update is released.

Next month, it is expected that the next generation of Apple TV could be released. Practically nothing is known about it yet, but it is expected that Apple could finally introduce an App Store for this device and turn it into a gaming console. In the same way, Apple TV could acquire new television functions or completely replace the Set-Top-Box.
