It's almost unbelievable, but at the end of April this year, AirTags will already be celebrating their third birthday. Apple showed them to the world for the first time on April 20, 2021, after piecemeal information had been leaked about them for months, even a year in advance. Although this locator is relatively expensive (compared to the competition), apple pickers immediately fell in love with it and use it extensively. Many then call for Apple to update it and present it in the second generation, which would be logically better in many respects compared to the first. But according to new information from very well-informed reporter Mark Gurman, that won't happen anytime soon, and that's actually a good thing. Why?

Gurman's sources specifically claim that the 2nd generation AirTags will arrive next year at the earliest, mainly because Apple still has a huge amount of 1st generation AirTags in stock. This is because, apparently, he has significantly over-dimensioned their production, and it is therefore necessary to sell out these warehouse "lagers" first. As for the second generation AirTag, according to Gurman sources, it is supposed to offer only very small upgrades, led by the deployment of the second generation ultra-wideband U chip. And it is precisely from the combination of these things that in a way it follows that waiting for the second generation is rather a positive thing, than negative.

The sale of the first generation of AirTags brings with it a very pleasant thing in the form of possible discounts. Since AirTags are no longer a hot new item that could not be found anywhere, sellers are able to reduce them considerably from time to time, thanks to which they can be obtained at very favorable conditions. And as long as the 1st generation AirTags are sold, it is clear that this fact will not change. Then once the 2nd generation AirTags arrive, it's clear that in addition to the 1st generation sales, we'll have to wait a while for the 2nd generation discounts. New Apple products are usually discounted only a few months after their launch.

The good price of the 1st generation AirTags is all the more pleasing when one realizes what this model actually has to offer less compared to the 2nd generation AirTag. As already stated above, AirTags are supposed to differ from each other primarily by an ultra-broadband chip, while its 2nd generation is supposed to be even more accurate. However, since its first generation is also very accurate, it is a big question whether we are even able to appreciate the even higher accuracy of the 2nd generation AirTag in any way. And that's why the question arises whether it even makes sense to want the AirTag 2 in the form that Apple intends according to Gurman's sources to arrive soon. Or maybe to arrive at all. Because currently the AirTag is a very good value-for-money device, which is likely to get even better as it ages. And if the added value of the AirTag 2 is not significantly greater than what is expected, then it is a bit of an exaggeration to say that Apple can easily keep it.
