The first generation of AirTag was presented by Apple on April 20 of this year, and it has been on sale since April 30. While this is a very useful and practical device, there are a few things that the successor could improve on.

Dimensions

Of course, the dimensions themselves come first. It is not so much the diameter of the AirTag as its thickness, which is simply too large to comfortably hide the device in, for example, wallets. Since there were many complaints on this topic after the release of this localization label, Apple could try to make the successor thinner.

Passthrough for the loop

The second design flaw of the AirTag is that if you want to attach it to something, typically luggage, a backpack, etc., you have to buy some accessories. Since the AirTag does not contain any space for the string to pass through, you can put it in various luggage, but you will probably not avoid an additional investment anyway. If you want to attach it to your keys immediately after purchase, you are simply out of luck. At the same time, competing solutions contain various penetrations, so Apple could be inspired here.

Function

The big unknown here is the battery, as the AirTag uses a CR2032 button cell. If Apple wanted to make the whole solution smaller, it would probably have to deal with another model. After all, there is a lot of room for improvement here, because the current battery can be removed too easily and could endanger the safety of children. Work should also be done on the range of Bluetooth, which could reach 60 m. A big advantage would then be the full integration of family sharing to mark things used by the whole household.

Name

Of course, the designation AirTag 2 or AirTag 2nd generation is directly offered. Depending on what it brings for innovation, Apple could still sell the original generation. But there are also other labels that are based on the labeling of the company's products. Again, in connection with the functions and, after all, the design, we could expect designations such as AirTag Pro or AirTag mini. If we take into account the competition, the designation AirTag Slim or AirTag Sticker (with self-adhesive back) is also not excluded.

Date of publication

If there were to come a successor to which the original AirTag should clear the field, it probably doesn't make much sense for it to be right away in the spring of next year. In this case, we would probably wait until the spring of 2023. However, if Apple wanted to expand the AirTag portfolio, it is quite possible that it would show us the Pro model already at its spring conference next year.

Price

The AirTag currently costs $29, so the successor should carry the same price tag. However, if an improved version were to come, it can be judged that the original price of the first generation will remain and the novelty will be more expensive. So $39 is being offered directly. In our country, however, the price of the AirTag is set at 890 CZK, so the improved novelty could cost 1 CZK.
