It's no secret that Apple has been trying to introduce all sorts of health features to its devices in recent years. Some time ago, there was also talk of the implementation of something similar in the AirPods wireless headphones. This is also indicated by one previously registered patent describing a system for detecting temperature, heartbeat and others. However, the latest information speaks of the possibility of using headphones to detect breathing frequency, to which the Cupertino giant has dedicated its entire research and recently published its results.

This is what the expected 3rd generation AirPods should look like:

Respiration rate information can be of great help when it comes to a user's overall health. In the document describing the entire research, Apple talks about the fact that it used only microphones to detect the user's inhalation and exhalation. As a result, it should be a great, and above all inexpensive and sufficiently reliable system. Although the study does not directly mention AirPods, but only talks about headphones in general, it is clear why this area is being investigated at all. In short, Apple has a penchant for bringing health functions to its AirPods as well.

However, it is currently unclear when we will actually see a product with such capabilities. The DigiTimes portal has already predicted that health sensors could appear in AirPods within a year or two. Even Apple's vice president for technology, Kevin Lynch, said in June 2021 that Apple will one day bring similar sensors to headphones and thus offer consumers far more health data. In any case, breathing rate detection should be coming to the Apple Watch soon. At least that's what a piece of code in the beta version of iOS 15, which MacRumors pointed out, suggests.
