Apple's AirPods, or AirPods Pro, have become extremely popular thanks to their design, features, and listenable sound. In addition, their huge advantage is that Apple is constantly developing firmware for them, thanks to which it adds new gadgets. Among other things, we surprisingly received new features for AirPods within iOS 14. If you haven't discovered any of the features yet or don't know how to use them, I recommend reading this article.

Surround sound in AirPods Pro

Probably the most interesting new feature that movie and series lovers will appreciate is surround sound. In practice, you will know the difference when you are watching a movie and you hear certain sounds from the side - just turn your head to that side and you will feel that the sound is coming in front of you. To activate this feature, first connect your AirPods Pro to your phone and put them in your ears then open them Settings -> Bluetooth, on your AirPods, tap icon in the circle as well a turn on switch Surround sound. However, this feature only works in the Apple TV app for now, both with supported purchased movies and Apple TV+. You also need to have the appropriate hardware – so you need iPhone 7 and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation) and later, iPad Air (3rd generation) and later, iPad (6th generation) and later, and iPad mini 5th generation .

Automatic switching between devices

Another useful gadget that Apple has come up with is automatic switching. For example, if you have music playing on your iPhone and you smoothly switch to watching series on your iPad, the headphones will automatically connect to the iPad and you will hear the movie through them. Conversely, when someone calls you, they switch back to the iPhone, the series is interrupted, and you can talk undisturbed. However, this function may not be suitable for some, so for its management connect the headphones to the iPhone or iPad and put them in your ears, open Settings -> Bluetooth, on your AirPods, tap icon in the circle as well and in the election Connect to this iPhone/iPad check either option Automatically or The last time you connected to this iPhone/iPad. Finally, it is worth adding that automatic switching works with AirPods Pro, AirPods (2nd generation) and some products from Beats.

Customization exactly according to your preferences

Most people probably hear equally well in both ears, but there is a large group of people who are hard of hearing in one ear. For those people, there is a setting that allows you to perfectly customize your AirPods. Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Audio-visual aids -> Adaptation for headphones. First activate the switch, then either choose from the preset options or tap on Custom sound settings.

Optimized battery charging

If you care about maintaining the perfect condition of your battery, then you certainly know about the optimized charging function, which is available in the iPhone, Apple Watch and soon also on the Mac. The device learns roughly what time of day you charge it and keeps the battery at 80% so it doesn't overcharge. About an hour before you regularly unplug your phone, it will then charge it. Now you can enjoy this function with AirPods or with their charging case, but unfortunately it cannot be deactivated or activated for AirPods separately. So, to turn optimized charging on or off in your headphones, open on your iPhone Settings -> Battery -> Battery health a (de)activate switch Optimized charging. From now on, everything will be set up for both your iPhone and AirPods.

Automation settings

The Shortcuts app has been available since iOS 13, but back then it didn't have as many features as its competitors. With the arrival of iOS 13, we saw automation, which was improved in the new operating system with the number 14. Among other things, you can now ensure that certain actions are performed after connecting (not only) Apple headphones. Move to the app Abbreviations, click the panel Automation and then select Create personal automation. Select from the menu Bluetooth and choose an action to take after connecting any device. So the automation works not only with AirPods, but with any accessory from a third-party manufacturer.
