Aerial shots as a screen saver on Apple TV are not only an interesting way to protect your TV from ghost burning, but they also make your TV screen an elegant addition even when it's not in use. However, not everyone is interested in buying an Apple TV, and many would like to see these videos on their Macs as well. Fortunately, thanks to developer John Coates, we now can. We can find from him on the GitHub repository utilitymacOS Aerial Screensaver FB Aerial, whose latest version so far 1.6.4 was released in November/November 2019 and brings several improvements including HDR support on macOS Catalina and 15 new videos from tvOS 13.

After a simple installation where you just open the file Aerial.saver and confirm its addition to the system, you can easily configure screensavers. Settings Desktop and screensaver you can find it either in the System Settings app or by right-clicking on the desktop and selecting the item Change Desktop background. In the saver settings, you will then find Aerial at the very end of the list.

In the saver options you will find an extensive list of videos that are available, but you also have the option to add your own videos here. You can also download individual videos from Apple to local memory with the (+) button, and in those that support it, you will also see a 4K icon if they are available in higher resolution and in HDR.

If so, in the right part of the window you can enable the option to download HDR versions of videos, but only on macOS Catalina and regardless of whether your display supports a higher color range or not. In the side part, you can also choose the resolution and encoding in which the videos should be downloaded. The choices are 1080p H264, 1080p HEVC and 4K HEVC.

The current version of the app also includes improved support for multiple displays including Spanned mode, which was already included in version 1.5.0. Users can also re-set the monitor distance. In the application, you can also adjust the display options of the text that appears at the beginning of the videos as a description of the currently displayed scenery.

The saver can also be set to show day and night videos at corresponding times of the day, based on geographic location, manual settings, Night Shift mode, or based on the currently active theme. In order to have as little worry as possible in the future, in the settings of the Aerial saver there is also an option to set automatic updates, but this currently only works on macOS Mojave and older.
