Adobe is preparing a new version of the Flash player 10.1 codenamed "Gala". Gala supports hardware support for Flash video playback in H.264 format. And starting today, you can download the beta version for Mac.

You will need the latest Mac OS X 10.6.3 and beta for the option of hardware support to play Flash video Flash Player 10.1 (currently RC2). Your Mac must also have one of the following graphics: Nvidia GeForce 9400M, GeForce 320M, or GeForce GT 330M.

If you are not sure if you have these graphics on your Mac, the following machines are involved:

  • Macbooks starting sales on January 21, 2009
  • March 3, 2009 Mac Mini
  • Macbook Pro with the start of sales from October 14, 2008
  • iMac from Q2009 XNUMX

Adobe would not be able to use the hardware acceleration support if Apple did not allow 3rd party developers to use the hardware support. This time, we can't blame Adobe for not taking this step sooner.

If you don't like beta testing, then wait a few weeks when Adobe Flash 10.1 should be officially released. According to the first reports, there really is a significant reduction in CPU load when playing Flash video.
