Apple came to prominence thanks to the first smartphone Apple iPhone, which literally defined the form of today's smartphones. Of course, the apple company was popular before with its computers and iPods, but the real popularity came only with the first phone. Steve Jobs is most often credited with the flourishing of the company. He is seen as the supreme visionary who has unbelievably moved the entire world of technology forward.

But it is necessary to mention that Steve Jobs was not alone in this. Sir Jonathan Ive, better known as Jony Ive, also played a very fundamental role in the modern history of companies. He is a British-born designer who was the lead designer at Apple for products such as the iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad, iPad mini, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and also the iOS system. It is Ive who is credited with the success of the Apple iPhone series, which stood out from the beginning with its unique design – with a completely touchscreen and a single button, which was also removed in 2017, with the arrival of the iPhone X. His vision, sense of design and precision craftsmanship helped bring modern Apple devices to where they are today.

When design is above functionality

However, Jony Ive became a rather unpopular figure at Apple at one point. It all started with the arrival of redesigned MacBooks in 2016 – the Cupertino giant significantly slimmed down its laptops, denying them all ports and switching to 2/4 USB-C connectors. These were then used for power supply and for connecting accessories and peripherals. Another huge ailment was the brand new keyboard, better known as the Butterfly keyboard. She bet on a new switch mechanism. But what didn't happen, the keyboard soon turned out to be very faulty and caused considerable problems for apple growers. Apple therefore had to come up with a free program to replace it.

The worst part was performance. The MacBooks of that time were equipped with relatively powerful enough Intel processors, which should have easily coped with everything that the laptops were intended for. But that didn't happen in the final. Due to the too thin body and poor heat dissipation system, the devices faced solid overheating. In this way, a never-ending circle of events was literally spun - as soon as the processor began to overheat, it immediately reduced its performance to lower the temperature, but almost immediately faced overheating again. So the so-called appeared thermal throttling. It is therefore not surprising that many Apple fans consider the MacBook Air and Pro from 2016 to 2020 to be, with some exaggeration, completely unusable.

Jony Ive is leaving Apple

Jony Ive officially left Apple already in 2019, as he founded his own company LoveFrom. But he still cooperated with the Cupertino giant - Apple became one of the partners of his new company, and therefore still had a certain power over the form of apple products. The definitive end came only in mid-July 2022, when their cooperation was terminated. As we mentioned right at the beginning, Jony Ive is one of the most important figures in the history of Apple, who contributed in an incredible way to the growth of the entire company and its products.

In recent years, however, it has significantly tarnished its name among many apple retailers, which was mainly caused by changes in the case of apple laptops. Their only salvation was the transition to Apple's own Silicon chips, which fortunately are significantly more economical and do not generate as much heat, so they (mostly) do not face overheating problems. But what is more special is that after his departure, the Californian giant immediately took several steps back, especially with its MacBooks. At the end of 2021, we saw the redesigned MacBook Pro, which came in a version with a 14″ and 16″ screen. This laptop received a significantly larger body, thanks to which Apple also equipped it with a number of connectors that it removed years ago - we saw the return of the SD card reader, HDMI and the extremely popular MagSafe power port. And as it seems, we continue to make these changes. The recently introduced MacBook Air (2022) also saw the return of MagSafe. Now the question is whether these changes are accidental, or whether Jony Ive was really responsible for the problems of recent years.
