Jony Ive is slowly and surely preparing to leave Apple. In the meantime, however, he received other honors. His portrait taken right in Apple Park is now hanging in the British National Portrait Gallery.

The portrait is located in room 32. Admission to the entire National Portrait Gallery is free, but there are special exhibitions in some areas that are subject to a charge.

Jony Ive is one of the leading figures of contemporary design. That's how Apple founder Steve Jobs described him when his "creative partner" joined the company in 1992. From his early high-end designs for the iMac or iPhone smartphone to the realization of the Apple Park headquarters in 2017, he has played a central role in Apple's progressive plans. It is one of the few portraits of Andreas Gursky and the only one now held by a public museum. This latest addition to our collection reflects the admiration of two leading creative figures.

Mutual respect played a role

Jony Ive put it this way:

I've been obsessed with Andreas' work for a couple of decades now and I vividly remember our first meeting seven years ago. His very specific and objective presentation of what he sees, be it a rich landscape or the rhythm and repetition of supermarket shelves, is beautiful and provocative. I am aware that he rarely takes portraits, so this is a special honor for me.

Andreas Gursky:

It was fascinating to photograph in Apple's new headquarters, a place that has played a role in the past, present and future. And above all, it was inspiring to work with Jonathan Ive in this environment. It was he who found the form of the technological revolution that was started by Apple and his sense of aesthetics that left its mark on an entire generation. I admire his tremendous visionary power and I tried to express this by capturing it in this portrait.

Jony Ive has led the design team since 1996. He is signed under all Apple products until now. In June, he announced that he would be leaving Apple and starts his own design studio "LoveFrom Jony". However, Apple will remain a major customer.
