OS X Mountain Lion will be released in the coming days. Customers who purchased a new Mac after June 11 this year will receive one copy of the new operating system for free. For a while, Apple even leaked the form for signing up for the so-called Up-to-Date Program, where you can apply for Mountain Lion for free...
On the aforementioned June 11, the WWDC keynote took place, at which Apple presented an updated line of MacBook Air and MacBook Pro as well as the new MacBook Pro with Retina display, but the event does not only apply to these models. If you bought any Mac after that date, you can get OS X Mountain Lion for free, too.
Apple has already launched the site OS X Mountain Lion Up-to-Date Program, where he describes how the whole process works. In addition to the aforementioned, it informs that customers have 30 days from the release of Mountain Lion to claim their free copy. Those who buy a new Mac after the release of Mountain Lion will also have 30 days to claim it.
Apple has even already leaked the form in which a copy is requested, but the technicians in Cupertino soon took it down. It will only appear again when Mountain Lion is actually available in the Mac App Store.
Some, however, managed to fill out the application before downloading the form, so we know what it will look like. Filling it out is not complicated at all, you only need to know the serial number of your Mac. Once you submit your request, you will receive two emails - one with the password to unlock the PDF file, which will come in the second message. This document contains a code to download Mountain Lion for free from the Mac App Store.
Hey, do I just get some kind of rush version for just one mac or a classic version that I can install on (x-I don't know how many) my macs in the house?
I bought a new macbook pro a few weeks ago and I was kind of hoping that when I got the mountain lion to go with it I could apply it to the iMac that I've had for about a year and a half…
I think it will go to the others after that. It's like iOS. When you buy on one device, you can install on all the others without paying anything extra. Just that this will be downloaded via a redeem code, but in principle it should work as if you had purchased it.
It's not like iOS. iOS is free, so you can install it on any iPhone, iPad, iPod you want. OS X is kind of paid, so it can be completely different.
The author had in mind that it is like with iOS applications ;)
just have a look at the license agreement in the Mac App Store (they are there and on the road), it's a little legal, but as a result of the purchased Mac OS X, it can be installed on up to 4 computers for personal use.
Yes, but that applies to the version you buy. I wonder if the same applies to the ML versions that you get for free when you buy a Mac now.
Previously, the included OS could not be installed on a different Mac, only on the exact same model (if you ignore the possibility of modifying the installer, which is not kosher...). But since you'll still need to enter an Apple ID, if you don't create a new one, you'll have ML tied to it and you'll probably see it in Purchased even for the older machine.
I think you can install it. Previously, the Family Pack was available, which allowed up to 5 computers in the household. In this case, I'm not sure if it can be installed, but the question is what will it do when you log in with your Apple ID, when you're already logged in elsewhere...
Well, when I release it tomorrow, I'll try it right away and let you know ;). Thanks for the advice for now.
according to me, it will be pre-installed or you will receive some redem code through which you can download it from the macapp store. I don't have a new mac
Hello, I purchased a Mac Book Air from Czech Computer, filled out the up-to-date program form, and the answer was that since the Mac Book Air was not purchased from an Apple Reseller, I am not entitled to free OSX ML. It is so? Do I have any chance of getting free ML from Apple?
