The presentation of the new iPhone 14 series is literally just around the corner. Apple will reveal the new generation of its phones already tonight, Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at the planned Apple Event. The event is scheduled to start at 19 p.m. local time, and the new generation of iPhone 14 will probably take the floor, which will be complemented by a trio of Apple watches – Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2 and Apple Watch Pro.

According to a number of leaks and speculations, the iPhone 14 will boast a number of interesting changes. Apparently, the removal of the long-criticized cut-out and its replacement by a double piercing await us. It is also interesting that only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models are expected to have the newer Apple A16 Bionic chipset, while basic phones will have to settle for last year's A15 Bionic version. But let's put this aside for now and let's focus on something else, namely the camera. Many sources have mentioned the arrival of a 48MP main camera, which Apple would finally replace the captured 12MP sensor after years. However, this change should only apply to Pro models.

Will a better zoom come?

Given the speculations about the arrival of a sensor with a higher resolution, it is not surprising that Apple users began to speculate about possible zoom options. It is therefore a question whether the new flagship will improve on this or not. In terms of optical zoom, the current iPhone 13 Pro (Max) relies on its telephoto lens, which provides three times (3x) zoom. This is only available on Pro models. Basic models are unfortunately unlucky in this regard and have to settle for digital zoom, which of course may not achieve such qualities. That's why some apple users came up with a theory, whether the just-mentioned 48 Mpx main sensor wouldn't bring an improvement, which could get a better digital zoom thanks to it. Unfortunately, these reports were quickly refuted. It is still true that digital zoom does not offer the same quality as optical zoom.

According to more accurate sources, among which we can include, for example, a respected analyst named Ming-Chi Kuo, we will not see any fundamental changes this year. According to his information, only the iPhone 15 Pro Max will bring a real change. The latter should be the only one from the next series to bring a so-called periscope camera, with the help of which a physically much larger lens can be added and overall the camera can be fit into the thin body of the phone using the periscope principle. In practice, it works quite simply – the mirror is used to refract the light so that the rest of the camera can be placed along the entire height of the phone and not across its width. We have known this technology for years from competing manufacturers who, thanks to it, bring increasingly high-quality cameras that can handle up to 100x zoom. According to these speculations, only the iPhone 15 Pro Max model will offer such an advantage.

More accurate analysts and leakers speak clearly – we will not yet see a better zoom, whether optical or digital, from the new iPhone 14 series. Apparently, we will have to wait until 2023 and the iPhone 15 series. Are you planning to switch to the expected iPhone 14? Alternatively, what news are you looking forward to the most?
