If you are one of the regular readers of our magazine, you certainly did not miss the introduction of the MagSafe battery for the latest iPhone 12 yesterday evening. The MagSafe battery, i.e. the MagSafe Battery Pack, is the direct successor to the Smart Battery Case. While some individuals are absolutely thrilled with this new accessory, some individuals come with a huge wave of criticism. In any case, it is clear that the new MagSafe battery will find its customers - either because of the design or because it is simply an Apple device. We have already covered the new MagSafe battery several times and we will do the same in this article, in which we will look at 5 things you may not have known about it.

Battery capacity

If you go to Apple's official website and look at the MagSafe battery profile, you won't find out much about it. What interests you most about such a product is the size of the battery - unfortunately, you won't find this information on the profile either. Anyway, the good news is that "watchers" managed to find out the battery capacity from the labels on the photo of the back of the MagSafe battery. Specifically, it is found here that it has a 1460 mAh battery. This may not seem like much when comparing iPhone batteries, in any case, in this case it is necessary to focus on Wh. Specifically, the MagSafe battery has 11.13 Wh, for comparison the iPhone 12 mini has an 8.57Wh battery, iPhone 12 and 12 Pro 10.78Wh and iPhone 12 Pro Max 14.13Wh. So it can be said that in terms of battery capacity, it is not as terrible as it might seem at first glance.

Fully up to iOS 14.7

If you decided to buy a MagSafe battery, you may have noticed that the first pieces will not reach their owners until July 22, which is about a week and a few days away. The supporting documents for the MagSafe battery state that users will be able to use its full potential only in iOS 14.7. However, if you have an overview of operating system versions, you probably know that the latest version for the public is currently iOS 14.6. So the question may arise, whether Apple will manage to release iOS 14.7 before the arrival of the first MagSafe batteries? The answer to this question is simple - yes, it will, that is, if there is no problem. Currently, the final RC beta version of iOS 14.7 is already "out", which means that we should expect a public release in the coming days.

Charging older iPhones

As already mentioned several times, the MagSafe battery is only compatible with iPhone 12 (and theoretically in the future also with newer ones). However, it should be noted that you can charge any other iPhone that supports wireless charging using the MagSafe battery. The MagSafe battery is based on Qi technology, which is used by all devices that support wireless charging. In this case, the official compatibility is guaranteed by the magnets, which are only found on the back of the iPhone 12. You can charge older iPhones, but the MagSafe battery will not hold on their backs, as it will not be able to be attached using magnets.

Reverse charging

Among the features that Apple phone users have been clamoring for for a long time is reverse wireless charging. This technology works by using your smartphone to wirelessly charge various accessories. For competing phones, for example, you just need to place headphones with wireless charging on the back of a phone that supports reverse charging, and the headphones will start charging. Originally, we were supposed to see reverse charging already with the iPhone 11, but unfortunately we didn't see it, not even officially with the iPhone 12. However, with the arrival of the MagSafe battery, it turned out that the latest iPhones currently most likely have a reverse charging function. If you start charging an iPhone (at least with a 20W adapter) to which a MagSafe battery is connected, it will also start charging. This is useful, for example, when using the iPhone in the car if you have a cable connected to CarPlay.

Do not use with a leather cover

You can clip the MagSafe battery to the "naked" body of the iPhone itself, or to any case that supports MagSafe and therefore has magnets in it. However, Apple itself does not recommend that you use the MagSafe battery together with the leather MagSafe cover. During use, it may happen that the magnets are "rubbed" into the skin, which may not look very nice. In particular, Apple states that if you want to protect your device and at the same time have a MagSafe battery connected to it, you should buy, for example, a silicone cover that will not be damaged. At the same time, it is necessary to mention that there should not be any other objects between the back of the iPhone and the MagSafe battery, for example credit cards, etc. In such a case, charging may not work.
