With the arrival of the new operating system iOS 16, we saw a redesign of the lock screen, which currently offers many more options for customization. Initially, there were many users who could not get used to the new lock screen, which is still the case for some of them, in any case, Apple is trying to gradually improve and simplify the controls. The fact that we will see a new lock screen in iOS 16 was clear even before the presentation, but the truth is that we did not see some of the expected options at all, and some that we were used to from previous versions, Apple simply removed. Let's look at them together.

Lack of original wallpapers

Every time users wanted to change the wallpaper on their iPhone, they could choose from several pre-made ones. These wallpapers have been divided into several categories and have been created precisely to simply look good. Unfortunately, in the new iOS 16, Apple decided to significantly limit the selection of lovely wallpapers. You can set either the same wallpaper on the desktop as on the lock screen, or you can separately set only colors or transitions, or your own photos. However, the original wallpapers simply disappeared and are not available.

Change controls

For several years now, there have been two controls at the bottom of the lock screen - the one on the left is used to activate the flashlight, and the one on the right is used to turn on the Camera application. We were hoping that in iOS 16 we would finally see the ability to change these controls so that we could, for example, launch other apps or perform various actions through them. Unfortunately, this did not happen at all, so the elements are still used to launch the flashlight and the Camera application. Most likely, we will not see the addition of this function in iOS 16, so maybe next year.

Live Photos as wallpapers

In addition to the fact that users in older versions of iOS could choose from lovely pre-made wallpapers, we could also set a Live Photo, i.e. a moving photo, on the lock screen. This can be obtained on any iPhone 6s and later, with the fact that after setting it was enough to move a finger on the locked screen. However, even this option has disappeared in the new iOS 16, which is a huge shame. Live Photo wallpapers simply looked good, and either users could directly set their own photos here, or they could use tools that could transfer some animated images to Live Photo format. It would definitely be nice if Apple decided to return it.

Automatic wallpaper darkening

Another feature that is associated with wallpapers and disappeared in iOS 16 is the automatic darkening of wallpapers. In older versions of iOS, Apple users could set the wallpaper to automatically darken after activating the dark mode, which made the wallpaper less eye-catching in the evening and at night. Sure, in iOS 16 we already have a function to connect the sleep mode with the wallpaper and thus we can set a completely dark screen, but not all users use the sleep mode (and concentration in general) - and this gadget would be perfect for them.

Volume control in the player

If you are one of those people who often listen to music on your iPhone, then you surely know that until now we could also use a slider to change the playback volume in the player on the locked screen. Unfortunately, even this option disappeared in the new iOS 16 and the player was narrowed down. Yes, again, we can easily change the playback volume using the buttons on the side, anyway, controlling the volume directly in the player was simply easier and more pleasant in some situations. Apple isn't expected to add volume control to the player on the lock screen in the future, so we'll just have to get used to it.
