Apple operating systems are among the most reliable, but from time to time, of course, an error appears. Of course, we try to help you with all kinds of errors in our magazine, through instructions or special articles in which we present several tips and tricks that can help. This article will fall into the second mentioned group and specifically in it we will show 5 tips on what to do when the names of contacts stop being displayed on the Mac - for example in the Messages application, or perhaps in the notifications themselves.

Log out or restart

Before starting more complicated procedures and repairs, first try to log out of your profile, or restart the device completely. Users often completely ignore the classic reboot of the device, thinking that it can't fix anything - but the opposite is true. Restarting the device, and not just the Mac, can help with most technical problems and it is mainly nothing complicated. To log out or restart, click in the upper left corner icon , and then on Log out the user whether Restart… Then log in again, or start the device, and check the status.

Check for the latest update

If logging out or restarting didn't help, make sure you have the latest macOS update installed. You can do this simply by tapping on in the upper left corner icon , and then on System Preferences. Open the section here System update and wait for an update to appear. If yes, then of course update your device. If you are one of the individuals who have installed the beta version of macOS, then of course this can also play a role. Some users shy away from updates for unclear reasons, which isn't ideal - including fixes for serious security bugs.

(De)activating Contacts on iCloud

Did logging out, restarting, or updating help? Nothing to worry about for now. Deactivating and reactivating Contacts on iCloud could solve the problem. It is thanks to this function that all your contacts can be shared to your Mac, which can then process them in other applications. Sometimes it can happen that contacts get stuck, so only phone numbers are displayed instead of names. To deactivate and reactivate iCloud Contacts, tap on the top left icon , and then go to the section Apple ID. Click here on the left iCloud, uncheck Contacts, wait a minute and then the function activate again.

Checking the active account in Contacts

If the names are still not displayed, you still need to make sure that the Contacts application can access the individual records that are stored on the account. First, open the app on your Mac Contacts. You can find this application in the Applications folder, or you can use Spotlight to launch it. Once you are in Contacts, click on the bold tab in the top bar Contacts, and then select an option from the menu Preferences. In the new window, move to the section in the top menu Accounts and select on the left specific account, on which your contacts are stored. Now make sure you have it with him checked possibility Activate this account. Possible deactivating and reactivating won't damage anything, of course.

(De)activating Messages on iCloud

In addition to the four tips above, you can also disable and re-enable Messages on iCloud. I have deliberately put this option last, as it can cause messages to be scattered, which is definitely not pleasant. However, if you still don't want to look at phone numbers instead of names, this is an unavoidable option. So go to the native app News, which you can find in the Applications folder, or you can launch it through Spotlight. Here, in the top bar, click on the bold icon on the left News and select from the menu Preferences… Another window will appear, in which at the top click on iMessage. Here deactivate possibility Turn on Messages on iCloud, wait a minute and then execute reactivation.
