Newer versions of Apple's operating systems offer advanced options for creating, customizing, and setting Focus Mode. Of course, you can also use this mode on a Mac, and today's article will be dedicated to the Focus mode in macOS.

Automation

Just like in iPadOS or iOS, you can set up automations in Focus on Mac to start this mode automatically. In the upper left corner of the screen, click Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus. In the left part of the window, select the mode for which you want to set automation, and in the Turn on automatically section, click "+". Finally, just enter the automation details.

Urgent notifications

It may happen that even in Focus mode you will want to receive selected notifications and announcements. For these purposes, the option to enable urgent notifications for selected applications is used. In the upper left corner, click Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus. Select the desired mode in the left panel, click Options in the upper right, and activate the Enable push notifications item.

Do not disturb while playing

Are you one of those Mac gamers who don't want to be interrupted while you're scoring in the NBA, headshotting in DOOM or farming in Stardew Valley? You can customize the Focus mode while playing. In the upper left corner, click Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus. In the lower left corner of the window, click the "+", choose Playing games, and if you want, you can set this mode to start automatically after connecting the game controller at the bottom of the window.

View status in Messages

If you want, other Apple device owners can see in iMessage that you are currently in Focus mode. Thanks to this, they will know, for example, that they don't have to worry about you if you don't reply to their message for a long time. If you want to activate the status display, click Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus in the upper left corner of the screen. Select the appropriate mode on the left side of the window, then activate the Share Focus State item.

Allowed calls

As with apps, you can also grant exceptions to allowed contacts or repeat calls within Focus mode in macOS. Click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of the screen -> System Preferences -> Notifications & Focus -> Focus. Select the mode you want, click Options in the top right, then activate Allowed and/or Repeated Calls as needed.
