For many individuals, Siri is an integral part of the iOS operating system, despite the fact that it is not yet available in Czech. Users can control the Siri voice assistant through voice commands without having to touch the iPhone at all. And it works very similarly in the case of dictation, thanks to which it is again possible to write any text without touching the display, using only your voice. In the recently introduced iOS 16, both Siri and dictation received several new options, which we will show together in this article.

Extension of offline commands

In order for Siri to carry out all the different commands you give her, she needs to be connected to the Internet. The commands are evaluated on remote Apple servers. But the truth is that last year Apple came up with support for basic offline commands for the first time, which Siri on the iPhone can solve thanks to " Engine. However, as part of iOS 16, offline commands have been expanded, which means that Siri can do a little more without the internet.

Ending the call

If you want to call someone and you don't have free hands, you can of course use Siri to do so. But the problem arises when you want to end a call without hands. Currently, it is always necessary to wait for the other party to hang up the call. However, in iOS 16, Apple added a feature that allows you to end a call using a Siri command. This function can be activated in Settings → Siri and search → End calls with Siri. During a call, just say the command "Hey Siri, hang up", which ends the call. Of course, the other party will hear this command.

What are the options in the app

In addition to the fact that Siri can work within the framework of the system and native applications, of course it also supports third-party applications. But from time to time, you may find yourself in a situation where you are not sure what Siri can be used for in a particular application. In iOS 16, an option has been added, with which you can easily find out. Either you can use the command "Hey Siri, what can I do in [app]", or you can directly move to the selected application and say the command in it "Hey Siri, what can I do here". Siri will then tell you what control options are available through her.

Turn off dictation

If you need to write some text quickly and you don't have free hands, for example while driving or any other activity, then you can use dictation to convert speech to text. In iOS, dictation is activated simply by tapping the microphone icon in the lower right corner of the keyboard. After that, just start dictating with the fact that as soon as you want to end the process, just tap the microphone again or stop speaking. However, it is now also possible to end dictation by tapping on microphone icon with a cross, which appears at the current cursor location.

Change dictation in Messages

Most users use the dictation feature in the Messages app, and that's for dictating messages, of course. Here, dictation can be started classically by clicking on the microphone icon in the lower right corner of the keyboard. In iOS 16, this button remains in the same place, but you can also find it to the right of the message text field, where the button for recording an audio message is located in older versions of iOS. The option to record an audio message has been moved to the bar above the keyboard. Personally, this change does not make sense to me, as it is pointless to have two buttons on the screen that do exactly the same thing. So users who often send audio messages will probably not be completely thrilled.
