If you've had the chance to watch Apple's commercials for iPads, you know very well that Apple presents them as a replacement for a computer. There are users for whom the iPad is really a sufficient tool, but we have to admit that it is still not a full-fledged computer. After reading this article, consider whether an iPad is the right choice for you, or whether it would be better to keep a desktop computer or laptop.

Programming

There are many useful apps in the App Store for iPad that you can use to partially learn programming and make some designs. Relatively high-quality ones include, for example Swift Playgrounds, however, it is still far from being a tool that would replace programming. Of course, it is possible that Apple will introduce Xcode for iPad, but it is unlikely that it will be well usable on current iPads in a full-fledged version. Not even because of the processor performance, but because of the smaller RAM memory, which in the case of the highest configuration of the iPad Pro is only 6 GB, and this will hardly be enough for comfortable use of Xcode.

System virtualization

If you are a developer and also program for Linux or Windows, you surely have these systems installed on your Mac. However, for the time being, it is not possible to run Windows or Linux on the iPad in the official way, which is a rather big problem. However, it is far from just programming, but also, for example, the creation of websites without the help of templates, for example in WordPress, when you cannot test whether the page behaves correctly on a specific system. Again, I don't think iPads have slow processors for such tasks, it's more about RAM size.

Connection to company systems

This problem is not related to the iPad as such, but rather to the fact that we live in Central Europe, where Windows is the most widely used. Schools or businesses often use systems that are only compatible with Microsoft's operating system. For example, when studying, this is not a serious problem, because usually there are enough other computers available, thanks to which the necessary action can be performed. In addition, from my own experience, I never really needed to be logged in to the school system, as it was only used for handing in work - and for that you can use the direct sending of the task in an e-mail attachment. However, the problem arises when you are in charge of managing certain things in the system. At such a moment, you can't do without Windows, so you can't use the iPad.

iPad OS 14:

Use of specific applications

Although you will find a huge number of programs for creating everything possible in the App Store for iPad, there are still software that you won't find here, and you won't even find a suitable alternative for them. Another problem is that even though you can find a certain application in the App Store for iPad, it may not be able to do everything that the computer version can do. A great example is, for example, Microsoft Excel, which can no longer handle basic things such as opening two documents at the same time. There is also the problem of finding, for example, suitable applications for 3D graphics.

Using two desktops and a mouse

If you connect two monitors to your computer, you can have different windows open on each. However, if you think that iPadOS also behaves like this, you are wrong. You can connect an external monitor, but unfortunately, in 90% of applications, the same content is displayed on the iPad as on the monitor. You can also easily connect an external mouse to the iPad, but even this does not behave the same as on macOS. On the other hand, it is not that difficult to improve the functionality of these things in subsequent updates, and I personally think that sooner or later Apple will resort to such a step.
