Apple's new operating system for Macs, macOS 12 Monterey, will be released on Monday, October 25. Although it will certainly not be revolutionary, it still offers quite a lot of evolutionary changes. However, some of those that the company introduced at WWDC21, when it gave us a first look at this system, will not be immediately available with the first release.

FaceTime, Messages, Safari, Notes - these are just some of the applications that are expected to receive many new features. Then there's the new Focus mode, Quick Note, Live Text and other features that are brand new. Apple provides a complete list of them support page. And it also mentions here that some features will not be available immediately with the first release of the system. It was expected with Universal Control, but less so with others.

Universal Control

You can use a single keyboard, mouse, and trackpad on Macs and iPads. When you switch from Mac to iPad, the mouse or trackpad cursor changes from an arrow to a round dot. You can use the cursor to drag and drop content between devices, which is perfect for when you're drawing on your iPad with Apple Pencil and want to drag it into Keynote on your Mac, for example.

At the same time, where the cursor is active, the keyboard is also active. There is no setup required as the linkage works automatically. Apple just states that the devices should be next to each other. The feature supports up to three devices at the same time, and received a lot of buzz after WWDC21. But since it wasn't part of any beta version of macOS Monterey, it was obvious that we won't see it with the sharp release. Even now, Apple only states that it will be available later in the fall.

shareplay

SharePlay, another big feature that permeates across macOS and iOS, will also be delayed. Apple didn't even include it with iOS 15, and it's so obvious that it's not even ready for macOS 12. Apple mentions that the feature is coming later in the fall with every mention of SharePlay, whether it's FaceTime or Music .

The feature is supposed to be able to transfer movies and TV shows to FaceTim to watch the same content with friends, it is supposed to be able to share your device screen, music queue, offer the possibility to listen to content together, synchronized playback, smart volume, etc. So it clearly targets the period of the global pandemic and wants to ease mutual communication and entertainment for those who cannot meet in person. So hopefully Apple will be able to debug it before no one remembers about COVID-19.

Memories

The fact that we won't see updated memories in the Photos application until later in the fall is quite surprising. Of course, the function reflects the options that are available in iOS 15. However, they came to it right away with its first version, and the question is, what is Apple's problem here. The new design, 12 different skins, as well as the interactive interface or the Shared with you feature are thus temporarily postponed, again until later in the fall.
