Almost since the introduction of the Apple Watch, we've been waiting for Google to finally launch its smartwatch solution. And this year is the year when everything is about to change, because we already more or less know the form of his Pixel Watch and some of its functions. However, it is not possible to say with certainty whether the first generation will be successful.

The first Apple Watch was introduced in 2015 and practically defined what a smart watch should look like. Over the years, they have become the best-selling watches in the world, across the entire segment, not just in a limited pool of smart solutions. The competition is here, but it is still waiting for a truly mass success.

The Pixel Watch should have cellular connectivity and weigh 36g. Google's first watch should otherwise have 1GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, heart rate monitoring, Bluetooth 5.2 and could be available in several sizes. In terms of software, they will be powered by the Wear OS system (apparently in version 3.1 or 3.2). They will reportedly be presented as part of Google's developer conference, which takes place on May 11 and 12, or until the end of the month.

Google is not good at the first generation of its products

So there is an exception, but perhaps it just proves the rule. Google's smart speakers were good in their first generation. But when it comes to other products, it's worse. E.g. Pixel Chromebooks have suffered from their displays burning right after a while of use. The first Pixel smartphone was far behind its competitors in terms of equipment and design. Even the first generation of the Nest camera was not very flattering, due to only an average sensor and untuned software. It didn't even address the Nest Doorbell, which suffered too many software bugs. The fact that it was intended for the exterior also caused problems for the changing weather.

What can go wrong with the Pixel Watch? Software bugs are pretty much a certainty. There's also a good chance the battery life won't be what many are hoping for, despite the expected 300mAh capacity. For comparison, the battery capacity of the Galaxy Watch4 is 247 mAh for the 40mm version and 361 mAh for the 44mm version, while the Apple Watch Series 7 has a 309mAh battery. With the introduction of its own watch, Google will also cannibalize the Fitbit brand it owns, which offers, for example, the very successful Sense model. So why should Android device users want a non-debugged Pixel Watch (unless they're only tied to Google phones)?

Now add charging problems and a raised display that is very susceptible to damage (at least according to the first photos of the watch). Google does not yet have any experience with smart watches and from a competitive point of view it is really important that it already enters the market with its solution. However, he does not have the opportunity to draw on any earlier mistakes. It is only necessary that he does not throw a flint in the rye and wipe our eyes with the second generation of watches. Even with regard to the Apple Watch, this is quite important, because it seems as if Apple rested on its laurels and did not move its watch anywhere.

Samsung has really set the bar high

Google's partner in the rebirth of Wear OS is Samsung, which set the bar high last year with its Galaxy Watch4 line. While this product, which is due for a 5th generation this year, wasn't perfect either, it's still widely regarded as an excellent smartwatch that was the first real competitor to the Apple Watch in the Android ecosystem. And it can be strongly assumed that the Pixel Watch will remain in their shadow.

At this point, Samsung has been making its smartwatch for seven years, and all its experience and all its previous mistakes are reflected in the creation of the successor. The Galaxy Watch4 may have been Samsung's first Wear OS watch since 2015, but it had all the hardware and software features that the previous Tizen simply lacked, clearing the field.

Media weight

Every little Google error usually appears on the front pages of many websites and is addressed on social networks, sometimes regardless of how serious it is and how many people it actually affects. So it's a guarantee that if the Pixel Watch suffers from any ailments, the whole world will know about it. And there are relatively few such brands. This includes, of course, Apple and Samsung. Since this is the company's first product, it will be an all the more controversial topic. After all, just follow the hype that made the lost prototype. After all, Apple once managed to do that with its iPhone 4.

It can be only small things, such as a momentary disconnection from the phone, a few seconds longer activation of anything, or perhaps an inconvenient strap with an impractical fastening system. Even now, even before the presentation of the watch itself, it is facing a lot of criticism due to the size of its display frame (it will not be much bigger than the Samsung solution). In fact, it doesn't even matter what Google decides to do, it will always be the opposite of what a significant portion of users want, or at least what is heard. That's just how it goes. And if the resulting product does not meet the users' expectations, it cannot be successful. But where does the road lead? Copying Apple Watch or Galaxy Watch? Certainly not, and that's why you have to cheer for Google in this regard, whether you're on the side of Apple, Samsung, or something else entirely.
