For Apple, the color white is iconic. The plastic MacBook was white, iPhones are still white in a certain sense today, of course this also applies to accessories and peripherals. But why does the company still stick to white tooth and nail, for example with AirPods, when its products already come in all colors?

Today we are all familiar with the unibody aluminum chassis of MacBooks, but at one time the company also offered a plastic MacBook that was all white. Although the first iPhone had an aluminum back, the iPhone 3G and 3GS already offered a choice of white and black. This lasted for the next generations, only with different variations, because now it is more starry white than classic white. Even so, with AirPods and AirPods Pro, you have no choice but to take their white variant.

In addition, white plastics have a significant problem in their durability. The MacBook chassis cracked in the corner of the keyboard, and the iPhone 3G cracked at the charging dock connector. On white AirPods, any dirt looks rather unsightly, and especially if it gets into your fingernails, it greatly ruins the original design. White plastics also turn yellow. Even so, Apple still can't say for sure.

Apple has been colorful for years

The company no longer keeps to its trinity of basic colors, i.e. white (silver), black (space gray), gold (rose gold). iPhones play for us in all colors, the same applies to iPads, MacBooks Air or iMac. With him, for example, Apple finally gave in and came up with a rich palette of colors for the peripherals, i.e. the keyboard, mouse and trackpad, so that everything matches perfectly. It's the same with the M2 MacBook Air, which has the same power cable as the body color variant you choose.

So why are AirPods still white? Why can't we distinguish them by color, and why do we keep stealing them in the same household, only to return them because we take the ones of the child, wife, partner, roommate, etc.? There are several reasons.

Clean design

White color means purity. All design elements stand out on white. The white is just visible and when you put the AirPods in your ear, everyone knows you have AirPods. If the AirPods are black, they will be easily interchangeable. With the status they have built, Apple just doesn't want that.

Price

Why are black Apple peripherals more expensive than silver/white ones? Why doesn't he sell the colored ones separately? Because it has to be painted. It must go through a surface treatment that applies color to the surface. In the case of AirPods, Apple would have to add some dye to the substance, which costs money. It's a lot for some headphones, but if you're selling millions of them, you already know it. Plus, would you pay more for, say, black AirPods just because they're black?

Engraving

If you want to personalize your AirPods so that no one takes them from you, or you don't take them from others, you have the option of free engraving on the case clearly indicating that these headphones are yours. The only problem here is that only Apple engraves them for free, so you have to buy the headphones from them, i.e. pay them the full price of the device. As a result, you are of course deprived of the possibility of a more favorable purchase from another seller who simply does not have the possibility of engraving.
