World AIDS Day is a globally significant day declared by the World Health Organization as an opportunity to raise awareness about the deadly pandemic disease, to encourage the fight against it and the HIV virus, to demonstrate support for people living with HIV and to honor the memory of its victims. It falls on December 1 every year, and this year Apple has prepared a special event for it.

World AIDS Day was first declared worldwide in 1988. In 1996, the United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) was established and took over the organization and promotion of the day. The following year, the World AIDS Campaign organization was established in connection with this program, which has been operating independently since 2004. Apart from many others, there is also (PRODUCT)RED, i.e. the licensed brand of Red, which seeks to involve the private sector in raising awareness and raising funds to help eliminate HIV/AIDS in eight African countries, i.e. Swaziland, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho , Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania and Zambia.

History of (PRODUCT)RED and Apple collaboration

The (PRODUCT)RED initiative was first announced at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in January 2006. Already in October 2006, Apple joined the program with its red iPod nano, of which it donated $10 to the program from each unit sold (price iPod ranged from $199 to $249). In January of the following year, he took the partnership even further, when customers could start buying gift cards to his iTunes, with 10% of the value of the card going to the fund.

In September 2007, the new generation of iPod nano arrived and with it the same amount that the Apple fund supported, i.e. 10 dollars from each sold piece bearing the color red. It was the same with subsequent generations of this iPod. However, in 2011, Apple also provided a red Smart Cover for the iPad, from which it charged $4,80. In the range of accessories, it was followed by the Bumper for iPhone 4. It was from August 2012 that Apple contributed $2 to the fund from each piece sold. However, in 2012, the iPod shuffle and iPod touch 5th generation were added to the (PRODUCT)RED line.

Red iPhones

The first "red" iPhones arrived on March 24, 2017, when the company rather atypically expanded the color portfolio of the iPhone 7. A year later it did the same with the iPhone 8, in September it directly introduced the red iPhone XR, a year later the iPhone 11, in 2020 models iPhone 12 and 12 mini and this year iPhone 13 and 13 mini.

In 2020, however, the iPhone SE 2nd generation also got its red recolor. The company thus introduced this red initiative into a certain regularity, and every new iPhone has had it for four years now. Of course, other accessories are also associated with this, especially in the form of covers. Recently, this has also been happening with the Apple Watch, when the first red ones were the Series 6 in September 2020, now the Series 7 is also red, and so are their dials or straps.

Together with December 1, Apple updated its Apple Online Store pages, where until December 6, it will promote not only its (PRODUCT)RED products, but also payment through Apple Pay. All purchases paid through this service will also help finance the fight against AIDS and covid-19. As COVID threatens to undo the progress made in the fight against AIDS, Apple has already engaged its customers in the fight against both pandemics last year. In 15 years of the joint fight against AIDS, with the help of the customer, grants supported by Apple provided vital treatment to 13,8 million people with HIV. Since 2006, Apple customers have helped raise nearly $270 million to fund prevention, testing and counseling services for people affected by HIV/AIDS.
