Recently, there has been more and more speculation about the arrival of the new MacBook Air. And there is nothing to be surprised about, since the current MacBook Air with M1 was introduced a year and a half ago and has not yet received an update. The fact that Air is next is also confirmed by the recent arrival of brand new MacBook Pros, which have been completely redesigned. Let's take a look together in this article at 10 things that we can (maybe) expect from the MacBook Air (2022). You can find the first 5 things directly in this article, the next 5 can be found on our sister magazine Jablíčkář.cz, see the link below.

The M2 chip

The new MacBook Air (2022) is also often referred to as the MacBook Air M2, for the reason that it will offer exactly this chip. Currently, the first generation of Apple Silicon chips with the M1 designation is closed - we have the M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max and M1 Ultra available. Since the MacBook Air is not intended for professionals, the use of a more powerful M1 Pro, Max or Ultra chip is out of the question. That said, the MacBook Air will most likely be the first device to offer the M2 chip. Just like a year and a half ago, when the Air, along with the 13″ Pro and the Mac mini, became the first devices with M1 chips.

New colors

You can get the current MacBook Air with M1 in three colors – silver, space gray and gold. So this is a classic color palette from Apple. However, if you look at the 24″ iMac, which is a computer designed for regular users, just like the MacBook Air, it abandoned the classic silver color and came up with new colors. Apple decided to take this step for the reason that it simply differentiates machines for ordinary users and professionals. The 24″ iMac is currently available in seven colors, namely blue, green, pink, silver, yellow, orange and purple. The new MacBook Air should come in similar colors, if not the same.

Redesigned keyboard

Along with the new colors of the MacBook Air, there is also speculation that we should expect a white keyboard. Given the white frames around the display, it would definitely make sense, but users simply don't like it. It must be mentioned that it is too early to judge. What is practically clear, however, is that the keyboard will undergo certain shape changes. The new MacBook Pros (2021) have keys that are slightly recessed, so they are easier to type on. At the same time, the top row of function keys, which replaced the Touch Bar, is as tall as the rest of the keys, which was not the norm on previous Macs. It is very likely that the MacBook Air will also see this change.

mini-LED display

The redesigned 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro came with a lot of new features – otherwise we wouldn’t call it a redesigned one. One of the novelties includes a mini-LED display that replaced the classic Retina. Recently, Apple is starting to install these mini-LED displays on many of its products, including some iPads. It is very likely that Apple will go the mini-LED route for the MacBook Air as well. It's hard to say whether we'll see ProMotion technology here as well, i.e. adaptive refresh rate - but it would definitely be an interesting step that would bring the Air closer to the Pro models. So we'll see.

MagSafe connector

When Apple came out with the new MacBook Pro in 2016, and then with the new MacBook Air in 2017, the most criticized step was definitely the removal of connectivity, including the MagSafe connector. Let's face it, MagSafe is one of Apple's best inventions. If you manage to trip over the power cable, it will disconnect because it uses magnets. With USB-C charging, you would take both the MacBook and other things on the table with you in the event of a trip. However, the 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro came with renewed connectivity, including the MagSafe connector, and it is practically clear that we will also see MagSafe in the new Air, which will be an absolutely great move.
