If you still write your journal on paper, you might want to start thinking about replacing it with a virtual journal. This is because it offers more options compared to paper, just as it is the case when comparing a classic book and an ebook.
Personally, I've never kept a journal, but I came across the app while browsing the App Store Day One (Journal/Diary). Why not give it a try after all, right? There is no need to write long novels every day, a few sentences about the most important events are enough, but if you enjoy it, you can of course record all the details of your life. The choice is yours.
There is nothing groundbreaking about the writing process itself. With a button + you create a new note, which you can edit at any time afterwards, which is of course harder to do on paper. An unlimited number of notes can be created every day, but I personally prefer editing already existing text. Because it is sometimes useful to highlight a piece of text, create a list or break up the text using headings, Day One supports it Markdown. If you don't know what this is, look into iA Writer review, where basic tags are described. You can change the font size in the settings.
All your notes can be sorted in three ways, namely by year, month or all chronologically (see previous image). Important memories can simply be "starred" and added to favorites. You don't have to remember when the event happened.
Of course, the developers also thought of protecting your personal data in the form of a code lock. It consists of four digits, and it is possible to set the interval at which it must be entered after minimizing the application - immediately, 1 minute, 3 minutes, 5 or 10 minutes. Of course, it can also be turned off completely.
Because storing valuable data on only one device can be compared to gambling, Day One offers synchronization to the cloud, namely iCloud and Dropbox. However, synchronization can only take place with one system at a time, so you have to choose which of the clouds you prefer.
If you are new to journaling, you may simply forget. The developers also thought of this and implemented a simple notification in the application. All you have to do is choose the time and frequency of the notification – daily, weekly or monthly.
What can we look forward to in future releases?
- tags for faster sorting of notes
- search
- inserting images
- export
Day One is a universal application for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Thanks to synchronization via remote servers, you have the same content on all your iDevices. Apple computer users will also be pleased - Day One also exists in a version for OS X.

We have been looking for an application like Day one - or something similar for a long time. And I still don't feel like it's what I'm looking for. But what struck me much more was the price difference between IOS and OS X. Especially when I don't think OSX offers anything more :-/.
Day ONE is an excellent app. It writes a diary very well. I use it every day and several times. I really appreciate the iPad, iPhone and Mac version. Everything syncs. It is precisely on portable devices that there is sometimes a problem with cloud synchronization. If the ability to add images, export, tags...it will be a really great diary application. Something I've been looking for for a long time. I recommend all Twitter diary-stoms.
I personally use Momento, which is de facto the same application, but you can also insert a photo
Momento is also excellent, but it lacks ipad, mac version, synchronization. Otherwise, it would probably be a killer for DAY ONE.
I use ThisIsNote or aNote for my mini-diary. Both applications can be clouded without problems.
