"Your storage is almost full." A message that never pleases iOS device users twice, and appears all the more often if they only have a 16GB iPhone, for example. There are various apps and methods to free up space on your iPhones and iPads. One option is an app iMyfone Umate, which works quite efficiently.

iMyfone Umate for Mac or PC promises to save/delete up to seven gigabytes. That sounds pretty confident, because that's already a very decent amount of storage in iPhones and iPads, so I wondered if the app could really do it. After going through the whole "cleaning" process, I was pleasantly surprised.

The whole process is simple. You connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to your computer with a cable and iMyfone Umate will automatically recognize the device. Then, with one click, you start scanning the entire device, and on the left side you have a choice of six tabs. Home serves as a signpost and in the other tabs you can see how much space you have already saved. and a guide to other functions. What's important is that you can see which options you've already used and how much space you've freed up in total.

You can get free space immediately in the Junk Files tab, where you will see unwanted files such as data from uninstalled applications, crash logs, cache from photos, etc. On the first iPad mini, I deleted 86 MB here, on the iPhone 5S it was only 10 MB and on the primary iPhone 6S Plus in the 64GB variant, the iMyfone Umate application found nothing at all.

Everything logically depends on how often you reset the device to factory settings or perform a clean installation of the system. Said iPad mini has not been reinstalled in several years. I received a significant investigation in the Temporary Files tab, i.e. temporary files that remained on the iPhone or iPad, for example, after updating the system, applications, etc.

For the iPad mini, the iMyfone Umate application scanned the entire device for almost half an hour, then deleted the found unnecessary content for another 40 minutes. As a result, 3,28 GB of data was deleted. However, a bit of a problem arises in that iMyfone Umate does not show you which files it actually found and which it subsequently deleted. You have to trust the app so much that it won't delete something important. And that's not exactly an ideal approach. But everything worked even after this process.

The third tab is Photos, where you can probably free up the most space. iMyfone Umate can back up your photos and then compress them and send them back to your device. At the beginning, you have two options to choose from – backup and compress photos, or backup and then completely delete images. Backup the application to the Compres folder in the directory Library > Application Support > imyfone > backup and this path cannot be changed, which is not exactly user-friendly.

If you choose post-compression, iMyfone Umate will automatically compress all photos and send them back to your device. When you open the images, you won't notice any difference, but we recommend that you at least keep the originals outside of the iPhone or iPad (as e.g. the mentioned backup will do) for later use. But if you don't need to have them directly on the device and you need to save space, compressing images can really save a lot of space.

A neat feature of iMyfone Umate is in searching large files. For example, it happened several times that I uploaded a movie to my iPad and then forgot about it. Needless to say, I sometimes search the entire system looking for it so I can delete it. The application will scan the entire device for me and then I just check which files I want to delete.

Finally, iMyfone Umate offers a quick app uninstaller that offers nothing more than the classic app removal that you would normally do on an iPhone or iPad by holding your finger on the icon and pressing the cross.

Those who have a problem with lack of free space on their iOS devices can try the iMyfone Umate application and save several megabytes to gigabytes of space. The shortcoming is the non-transparency of the application in the deletion of some files and data, when in short you are not guaranteed that everything will work correctly, but during our testing nothing like this happened with any device. But it is also important not to disconnect the cable from the computer or iOS device during scanning or cleaning, as you could very likely lose data at that moment.

iMyfone Umate can clean all iPhone models from the 4th to the latest. On the contrary, with iPad it can handle all models except the first, and with iPod Touch only with the fourth and fifth generation. You can the full version of the application buy now on sale for half price $20 (490 crowns). The trial version really only serves to familiarize yourself with the application.
