Probably each of you already has at least one favorite map application on your iPhone, which you use when navigating in cities, when looking for specific businesses, streets or areas. If you move around Prague most of the time, perhaps you could consider replacing your existing maps with 2GIS, or at least alternating them with them.

2GIS maps are completely unique with their almost endless database of companies, shops, entertainment venues, restaurants, public services and many other objects, for which they provide a complete service as far as possible, in terms of contact details, opening hours and other important information.

This is all, of course, a superstructure for the map documents, which currently cover eight countries, including the Czech Republic and the capital city of Prague. 2GIS creates the entire system itself - from drawing maps to collecting and updating information about individual organizations. It offers, among other things, real 3D models of the most famous buildings, such as the National Theater or the Church of St. Welcome.

Let's start with the first of the two key parts of the app - the maps themselves. We will focus on Prague, which is the only place in the Czech Republic processed by 2GIS so far. The map materials are unique, so you won't even find familiar environments from Apple or Google Maps in the application. One of the advantages of 2GIS maps is that (just like the database) they can work offline. The available maps are so detailed that even stalls or statues are drawn on them, and when you zoom in, you move in a complete 3D view.

That's why 2GIS is particularly suitable for detailed orientation around Prague and will be of great use when you're looking for a specific building. The application can even show entrances to selected buildings and objects on the map, so you don't have to circle around the destination and go straight inside. Another key part of the application is related to this – a giant database of organizations with all important data, which 2GIS updates daily and sends fresh data to the application. If you use the app offline, you will get the latest information once a month. Twice a year, 2GIS carries out a complete update of the database, both by phone and in the field.

This is precisely where I see the greatest advantage of 2GIS. For various companies, they will provide you with the address, phone numbers, web addresses, e-mails, as well as the possible opening hours of the shops and whether it is possible to pay in cash or by card. For restaurants, information about lunch menus, average spend and other details about what is happening in the establishment can be useful. 2GIS can also display all the companies located inside the selected buildings. Just click on it and you will get a list of the organizations that are based there, again including all the information.

Many will also appreciate indoor navigation, which can be used, for example, in shopping centers. On the map, you can switch between individual floors of large department stores and browse available stores. Advanced search is also integrated in 2GIS. On the one hand, you can have the nearest restaurants, bars, pharmacies, ATMs, etc. found, but you can also filter the results according to whether the business in question is currently open or whether it is possible to pay cashless.

2GIS also takes into account urban public transport, without which the use of maps would not make such sense for most users. On the one hand, the application displays all tram and bus stops, metro and train stations, and at the same time can use them for navigation to selected points. Here you can choose whether you want to go by car or use public transport. 2GIS does not provide such turn-by-turn navigation as Apple and Google, but in the center of Prague even a simpler form of navigation is usually sufficient.

If the iOS version of 2GIS is not enough for you, you can also find these maps for Android, but also on the web 2gis.cz. Apart from Prague, the application will also offer 75 other large cities, but in the vast majority of cases to the east of us, so do not expect similar detailed maps for the largest European capitals such as London, Paris or Rome just yet. One of the disadvantages is that 2GIS are not yet optimized for the large displays of the new iPhones.
