The phenomenon of hacking is as old as the world of computing itself. In today's episode of our Back to the Past series, we will remember the day the FBI arrested one of the most famous hackers - the famous Kevin Mitnick. But we also remember the year 2005, when the YouTube server was launched publicly for the first time.

The Arrest of Kevin Mitnick (1995)

On February 15, 1995, Kevin Mitnick was arrested. At the time, Mitnick already had quite a long history of messing with computer networks and phone systems - he first tried to hack successfully at the age of twelve, when he tampered with the Los Angeles public transport system so that he could ride the bus for free. As technology progressed, Mitnick's methods became more and more sophisticated, and in the XNUMXs he already ventured into the secure networks of large companies such as Sun Microsystems and Motorola. At the time the FBI arrested him, Mitnick was hiding in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina. Mitnick was found guilty on several counts and spent a total of five years in prison, including eight months in solitary confinement.

YouTube Goes Global (2005)

On February 15, 2005, the YouTube website was launched publicly for the first time. It is hard to say whether its creators at that time had any idea what dimensions their project would eventually reach. YouTube was founded by three former PayPal employees - Chad Hurley, Steve Chej and Jawed Karim. Already in 2006, Google bought the website from them for 1,65 billion dollars, and YouTube is still one of the most visited websites ever. The first video uploaded to YouTube is the nineteen-second clip "Me at the Zoo", in which Jawed Karim briefly talks about his visit to the zoo.
