Today's installment of our tech highlights series will cover the first announcement of the upcoming Linux, Netscape's Project Navio, and Steve Jobs' departure from Apple. The last-named event is mentioned on foreign servers in connection with August 24, but in the Czech media it appeared on August 25 due to the time difference.

Harbinger of Linux (1991)

On August 25, 1991, Linus Torvalds posted a message on the comp.os.minix Internet group asking what users would like to see in the Minix operating system. This news is still considered by many to be the first indication that Torvalds is working on an entirely new operating system. The first version of the Linux kernel finally saw the light of day on September 17, 1991.

Netscape and Navio (1996)

Netscape Communications Corp. On August 25, 1996, it officially announced that it had built a software company called Navio Corp. in an effort to enter into an alliance with IBM, Oracle, Sony, Nintendo, Sega, and NEC. Netscape's intentions were really bold - Navio was to become a competitor to Microsoft in the field of creating operating systems for personal computers. Netscape's management hoped that their new company would be able to create a series of computer applications and other products that could represent a more affordable alternative to Microsoft's products.

Steve Jobs leaves Apple (2011)

On August 25, 2011, a major event in the history of Apple took place. Overseas servers are talking about August 24th, but the domestic media did not report Jobs' resignation until August 25th due to the time difference. That's when Steve Jobs decided to resign from his position as CEO of Apple due to serious health reasons, and Tim Cook took his place. Although Jobs' departure had long been speculated, the announcement of his resignation came as a shock to many. Despite the fact that Jobs decided to remain on the company's board of directors, Apple shares fell by several percent after the announcement of his departure. "I've always said that if the day came when I could no longer live up to expectations as head of App, you'd be the first to let me know. Unfortunately, that day has just arrived," Jobs' resignation letter read. Steve Jobs died as a result of his illness on October 5, 2011.
