Leadership roles often change quickly and unpredictably in the world of technology. Those who at one point reigned supreme on the market, may fall into oblivion within a few years and struggle for bare survival. In the field of web browsers, Netscape Navigator was once clearly dominant - in today's episode of our series called Back to the Past, we will remember the day when this platform was bought by America OnLine.

AOL buys Netscape Communications

America OnLine (AOL) bought Netscape Communications on November 24, 1998. Founded in 1994, Netscape Communications was the creator of the once popular Netscape Navigator (formerly Mosaic Netscape) web browser. Its publication was to continue under the wings of AOL. In November 2000, the Netscape 6 browser, based on Mozilla 0.6, was released, but it suffered from a number of bugs, was very slow, and faced criticism for its lack of scalability. Netscape did not fare too well later on, and its last version, based on Mozilla, was released in August 2004. In October 2004, the Netscape DevEdge server was shut down and part of the content was taken over by the Mozilla Foundation.
