Today it is a matter of course for us that the popular communication platform Skype belongs to Microsoft. But it wasn't always like that. The first news that Microsoft was going to acquire Skype appeared in the spring of 2010. Although Skype was relatively well-known at the time, it was not doing very well financially, and Microsoft promised, among other things, to correct this the financial situation.

Microsoft wants to buy Skype (2010)

On May 10, 2010, Microsoft confirmed that it wanted to buy the Skype communication platform. The price of the acquisition was supposed to be 8,5 billion dollars. At the time, Skype was owned by Silver Lake. In connection with the acquisition plans, Microsoft has said, among other things, that it would like to integrate Skype's features into its existing products and services, including the Office platform, Windows Phones and the Xbox gaming system. The purchase of Skype at the time represented the largest acquisition for Microsoft in the history of its existence. "Today is a big day for Microsoft and Skype, as well as for businesses and consumers around the world," Steve Ballmer said at the time.

At the time, Skype wasn't doing the best in terms of earnings—for 2010, Skype reported a loss of $6,9 million, and it was also partially in debt. Part of the agreement with Microsoft included, among other things, the cancellation of Skype's debts. It wasn't the first time that Skype went under a different company. It was bought by eBay for $2005 billion in 2,6, but the partnership didn't work out the way eBay management envisioned.
