Even before giants like Google or Yahoo saw the light of day, a search engine known as W3Catalog was born. It was, of course, much simpler than current search engines - and today we will commemorate the day of its official launch. In addition, today's installment of our series will discuss the emergence of the RS/6000 product line from IBM.

IBM RS/6000 (1997)

IBM introduced its RS/2 line of computers on September 1997, 6000. It was a series of servers, workstations and supercomputers, and at the same time a successor to the IBM RT PC series. Apple and Motorola were involved in the development of some of the later models of this series, IBM shelved some of the RS/6000 series products in October 2000.

The First Search Engine (1993)

September 2, 1993 was the day the first web search engine saw the light of day. Already a year into its launch, it is clear that this tool had very little in common with today's search engines. It was known as W3Catalog or CUI WWW Catalog, and was created by developer Oscar Nierstrasz from the Center for Informatics at the University of Geneva. The W3 Catalog was in operation for about three years before more modern Internet search tools began to appear. The operation of W3Catalog was definitively terminated on November 8, 1996, the w3catalog.com domain was purchased at the beginning of 2010.
