Although today is a holiday, we will not commemorate the burning of Master Jan Hus in this part of our "historical" series. Today is, among other things, the anniversary of the acquisition of Lotus Development by IBM. We will also briefly recall the end of trams in London or perhaps the start of broadcasting from the Czechoslovak Television studio in Brno.

IBM and the acquisition of Lotus Development (1995)

On July 6, 1995, IBM successfully completed its $3,5 billion purchase of Lotus Development. For example, the Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet software or the Lotus Notes program came from the Lotus Development workshop. IBM intended to use Lotus 1-2-3 to create a full-fledged competitor to Microsoft's Excel, but the plan failed, and in 2013 the company officially announced the end of support for the software. Groupware Lotus Notes fared a bit better and became very popular with a number of companies. In 2018, IBM sold the Lotus/Domino division for $1,8 billion.
