With the arrival of the redesigned 14″/16″ MacBook Pro (2021), quite a discussion arose in response to the cutout in the display. The notch has been with us on our iPhones since 2017 and hides the so-called TrueDepth camera with all the sensors for Face ID. But why did Apple bring something similar to an apple laptop at all? Unfortunately, we don't know exactly. However, it is clear that it is used to store a Full HD webcam.

Already at first glance, the cut-out in the case of a laptop can attract attention. From the point of view of functionality, however, it is not an obstacle at all, on the contrary. Thanks to this change, Apple managed to reduce the surrounding frames around the display, which was understandably a problem in the case of the camera, the sensor for automatic brightness adjustment and the green LED light, which no longer fit in such narrow frames. That is why we have the famous notch here. However, since the frames have been reduced, the top bar (menu bar) has also received a slight change, which is now located exactly where the frames would otherwise be. But let's leave the functionality aside and let's focus on whether the cut-out is really such a big problem for apple lovers, or if they are more likely to wave their hands over this change.

Did Apple step aside with the deployment of the notch?

Of course, according to the reactions on social networks, we could clearly say that the upper cut-out of last year's MacBook Pro is a complete failure. Their disappointment and dissatisfaction can be seen in the reactions of (not only) apple growers, which they like to point out especially on discussion forums. But what if it is completely different? It is quite common that if someone doesn't mind something, they don't need to speak up, while the other party is very happy to express their dissatisfaction. And apparently, the same thing happens with that notch. It happened in the community of Mac users (r/mac) on the social network Reddit survey, who asked exactly this question. In general, he focused on whether respondents (both Mac users and others) minded the cutout or not.

837 people responded to the survey and the results speak clearly in favor of the cutout. In fact, 572 Apple users answered that they have no problem with it and that it does not bother them in any way, while 90 people who do not currently work with Mac computers share the same opinion. If we look at the opposite side of the barricade, we find that 138 apple growers are dissatisfied with the notch, as are 37 other respondents. At a glance, we can clearly see which side more people are on. You can see the results of the survey in the form of a graph below.

If we then put the available data together and ignore the respondents, whether they use a Mac or not, we get the final results and the answer to our question, whether people really mind the top cutout, or whether they don't mind its presence. Besides, as you can see below, we can practically say that only 1 person out of 85 is not satisfied with the notch, while the rest more or less don't care. On the other hand, it is necessary to take into account the sample of the respondents themselves. The overwhelming majority of them are users of Apple computers (XNUMX% of people who took part in the survey), which can somehow distort the resulting data. On the other hand, the overwhelming majority of respondents from the competition's users answered that they simply don't mind the cut-out.

The future of cutout

Currently, the question is what kind of future the cut-out actually holds. According to current speculation, it seems that in the case of iPhones it should more or less disappear, or be replaced by a more attractive alternative (perhaps in the form of a hole). But what about apple computers? At the same time, the cut-out can appear to be completely pointless when it doesn't even contain Touch ID. On the other hand, as we have already said above, it is relatively effective from a functional point of view, when it can work much better with the top menu bar. Whether we will ever see Face ID is, of course, unclear for now. How do you view the notch? Do you think its presence on Macs is not a problem, or would you prefer to get rid of it?
