Apple's fitness and health activities are not uncommon these days. When you say health and Apple, most of us think of the HealthKit platform and the Apple Watch. But Apple was once involved in this area in a different way. In July 2006, in collaboration with the Nike company, he introduced a device called Nike+ for monitoring running activity.

The full name of the device was Nike+ iPod Sport Kit, and as the name suggests, it was a tracker that had the ability to connect with the popular Apple music player. This move is considered one of Apple's first steps towards more intensive activity in the field of health and fitness. At that time, a number of technology companies became more involved in this direction - in the same year, for example, Nintendo came out with its Wii console with a motion sensing function, various dance and fitness mats also enjoyed popularity.

The Nike+iPod Sport Kit was definitely very interesting. It was a truly miniature sensor that could be inserted under the insole of compatible Nike sports shoes. The sensor then paired with an equally small receiver that was attached to the iPod nano, and through this connection users could perform physical activity, listen to music, and at the same time rely on their activity being properly recorded. The Nike+iPod Sport Kit could not only measure the number of steps its owner walked. It was thanks to the connection with the iPod that users could also monitor all the statistics and, similar to the case of many fitness applications for smartphones, they could also set their own goals in terms of physical activity. At the time, the voice assistant Siri was still the music of the future, but the Nike+iPod Sport Kit offered the function of voice messages about how far users ran, what speed they managed to reach and how close (or far) the destination of their route was.

When the Nike Sensor+iPod Sport Kit was introduced, Steve Jobs said in a related press statement that by working with Nike, Apple wants to take music and sports to a whole new level. "As a result, you'll feel like you always have your personal trainer or training partner with you every step of the way," he stated.
